As two African American men, each with their own beliefs—one Jewish and the other a non-believer—await their fates in a jail cell, the clash of their worldviews leads to both comedic and dramatic moments. The story beautifully captures the complexities of navigating the prison system while highlighting the humorous and touching interactions that arise between the characters. The play features Hassiem Muhammad, who recently won the Helen Hayes Award for playing Caliban in The Tempest at the Round House Theatre in Bethesda, MD.
Performances of Jailbirds will take place at the Chain Theatre (312 W 36th St, 4th Floor, New York, NY 10018) on the following dates and times:

Now in its 16th year, the Chain Theatre Winter One-Act Festival has become one of the largest theatre festivals in New York City. Past festivals have featured original works by Lyle Kessler ("Orphans") and Eric Bogosian ("Talk Radio").

Cast
Hassiem Muhammad
Paul
A graduate of The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, he is a New York City-based actor and movement specialist. He is excited to be a part of the Chain Theater Company's One Act Festival, reprising his role as Paul in Jailbirds.
Hassiem has worked on projects across the film, television, theater, and commercial industries. His most recent accolade came performing in The Tempest at Round House Theatre, for which he received a 2023 Helen Hayes Award winner! Other regional credits include SWEAT at The Pioneer Theatre, The Three Musketeers at Cleveland Playhouse, and Shoebox Picnic: Route 1 at Alabama Shakespeare Festival. He has also enjoyed participating in festivals and workshops in NYC at Emerging Artists Theater, Corkscrew Theater Festival, The New School, and Play On Shakespeare.
Making his rounds on the CBS network, Hassiem has appeared on Madam Secretary, Blue Bloods, and FBI. He also had the opportunity to work on an indie feature, The Drummer, starring Danny Glover, and in 2022, he worked on GeneralMotors's Super Bowl LVI commercial starring the infamous evil villains of the Austin Powers franchise.
