The Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, returning triumphantly to North America for the first time in over 10 years, makes a stop at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall on Tuesday, Mar. 2 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $55-$80 (with a limited number of "smart seats" at $30).

The venerable orchestra, conducted by Maestro Hobart Earle, is scheduled to perform Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and a selection of waltzes, marches and polkas by Strauss.

Founded in 1937, the orchestra is the only performing arts organization in the Ukraine to go from regional status to national status since the independence of Ukraine in 1991. Gramophone magazine wrote, "The rise and rise of Ukraine's Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, under their dynamic young American chief, Hobart Earle, must rank as one of the unlikeliest stories to emerge from the classical music world in recent times...critics the world over, from Vienna to New York to Moscow, clearly know a good thing when they hear it."

The Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra's concert at the Van Wezel is sponsored by WUSF. The Orchestra and Classical Series continues with Lang Lang with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra on Tuesday, Mar. 30th.

Tickets may be purchased at the Van Wezel Box Office, by calling (941) 953-3368 or by logging onto www.vanwezel.org. Dinner is available prior to most shows by Michael's on East at the Van Wezel by calling (941) 366-0007 or logging onto www.bestfood.com.
