Acorn Announces Short Plays For 10th Annual MPF 4/14-29

Acorn Productions, a non-profit art presented located in the Dana Warp Mill, announces script selections for the short play portion of the tenth annual Maine Playwrights Festival, to be held at the St. Lawrence Arts Center on Munjoy Hill in Portland from April 14 to 29, 2011.

Maine State Music Theatre is looking for bright, energetic kids to perform in two special shows this season: ANNIE and THE WIZ. ANNIE needs girls to play Annie and her fellow orphans. Candidates must be between 6-15 years old and be able to act, sing, and dance. THE WIZ is searching for African American children. The Acorn Shakespeare Ensemble, presenters of the 'Naked Shakespeare' series, continues the company's 2010/11 season of events on Monday, March 7 at 8 p.m. with another edition of the troupe's popular 'Sonnet and Soliloquies' series at the Wine Bar on Wharf St. in Portland's Old Port. The March edition will feature the usual mixture of new pieces and old favorites, includes speeches delivered in an intimate setting in the round, and short scenes that are environmentally staged in the space. The performance is free with an $8 suggested donations. Patrons are encouraged to arrive early and order food and drink to enjoy during the show.

Freeport Players announce AUDITIONS for 10 principles and approximately 15 chorus/ensemble members in Gilbert & Sullivan's well-known light operetta. Auditons will be held Sunday, March 6, 6-9pm and Tuesday, March 8, 7-9pm, at Freeport Middle School, 19 Kendall Ln. Actors should be prepared to read from the script and sing a song from the score. (Scripts are available online from a variety of sources.) Actors are encouraged to e-mail Elizabeth at info@fcponline.org so we will know to expect you and notify you if there are changes to the audition dates and location.

The 2011 season ends with a bang, featuring an all-African American cast revving up theatregoers in THE WIZ, the retelling of Frank L. Baum's THE WIZARD OF OZ in a unique 70s style.
