A viral video of 18-year-old Yunchan Lim playing Rachmaninoff’s famously challenging Third Concerto at the Cliburn Competition amassed nearly 10 million views and set off online debate about where it ranks among the best ever. Lim brings his electrifying performance of that same piece to the Hollywood Bowl. In the second half, rising star Shiyeon Sung conducts the LA Phil in Symphonic Dances, Rachmaninoff’s final orchestral work, which blends endless Romantic melodies with dance rhythms, modern musical elements, and hints of jazz.
