Student Blog: What I Couldn't Perform Without

One of my favorite things to watch on YouTube and TikTok is rehearsal bag packing; it is, truly, something I will never scroll away from. I love getting new ideas for what to include in my own bag and getting see a glimpse of someone's performer life through their belongings. I have compiled a list of my own rehearsal bag necessities and how I pack for tech week! 1. Choosing a bag

Two words: Tote. Bags. I am a huge tote bag lover and I will typically switch them out throughout the rehearsal process because I love them all so much! I have accumulated mine from merch stands at the touring shows I see, but they have great options on Amazon (and Etsy) depending on the musical you're looking for. For tech week, I tend to opt for a bigger bag that can hold literally everything. I don't care how long the run is, I will always look like I am moving into a new home. For this kind of a bag, a will go inbetween a duffel bag or an oversized tote/beach bag depending on whether or not I want to deal with a zipper. Whatever you choose, find something sturdy and with strong, comfortable straps.

2.  Shoes

From the time you audition, to when you start rehearsing, you should already know what style of dance the show requires. From that, you will know what type of shoes you will need. Personally, even if I know it's a tap-heavy musical, I will still bring my ballet slippers, jazz shoes, etc. Basically, there's no such thing as being too prepared. I am a Capezio girl through and through so you will be seeing a theme. My ballet, jazz, tap, and character shoes are all Capezio models. However, I am looking into making the switch to Bloch character shoes. I want the look of LaDuca or high-end Capezio without the price tag. One day I will spend the money for LaDuca's quality, but today is not that day.

3. Undergarments

My favorite tights are Capezio transitions (I seriously own them in every color); they are open at the arch of your foot, so they are ideal for transitioning between footed and footless styles, or when you need to check if you broke your toe! If you are apart of the pale/Edward Cullen skintone club, 'Caramel' is your best bet for a skin tone shade (it looks dark, but trust me, it is the lightest).

Shocker, but my favorite leotards are also from Capezio! I am a leotard hater, but if it is a necessity for your quick changes, Capezio's don't make me feel claustrophobic.

Never underestimate knee pads. In the past four months, I've needed them for two shows. One show required a skin tone match for them, so I say invest in those over a black or white option. On that same note, don't forget to take care of your joints and injuries; pack your various braces and KT Tape.

4. Makeup

Stage makeup is not meant to have the smoothest base or a subtle contour, so don't be afraid to have cakey makeup and sharp contour. I will always repurchase drugstore brands for this purpose since I'm wearing it to sweat it off. With the stage lights, your main goal is to not be washed out and to have it last for the entirety of the show. I like to wear a shade or two darker than I what I would purchase for everyday; darker foundation, darker contour, brighter/more pigmented blush, and a darker brow shade. Keep in mind that you don't have to look normal in the mirror, your facial features just need to be seen by the audience. 

5. Make it your own!

Don't forget to use this blog to make your rehearsal bag your own! Pack your favorite water bottle, a snack, and whatever you need to keep your voice healthy. Every show is different and may require different things, but this is always the base of my rehearsal/tech bag!
