Ram n Ortega Quero Joins Colburn School Faculty

The Colburn School announces the appointment of esteemed oboist Ramón Ortega Quero to its faculty. Quero, who is currently Principal Oboe of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the incoming Principal Oboe of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, will accept students to his oboe studio starting in fall 2018.

A native of Granada, Spain, Ramón Ortega Quero is recognized around the world as one of the most promising musicians of his generation. During the 2017-18 season, Quero performed in Spain with Orquestra de Extremadura and Orquestra de Castilla y León; performed with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra; and toured throughout the Netherlands with Philharmony Zuidnederland. Quero is also a member of and on tour with the wind quartet variation5, whose self-titled album was released on Berlin Classics (Edel).

Quero received training from Miguel Quirós at the conservatory in Granada, and became a member of the Andalusian Youth Orchestra when he was twelve years old. In 2003, Quero reached an important milestone when conductor Daniel Barenboim accepted him as a member of the East-West Divan Orchestra. One of Ramón Ortega Quero's most pivotal moments was winning first prize at the ARD Music Competition, the largest international classical music competition in Germany, in September 2007, paving the way for his career as a soloist.

Since spring 2008, Quero has been the Principal Oboe of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra under its Principal Conductor Mariss Jansons. In fall 2018, Quero will take over as the Principal Oboe at the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Quero has also worked with renowned conductors Riccardo Muti, Herbert Blomstedt, Sir Colin Davies, John Eliot Gardiner, Daniel Barenboim, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Bernhard Haitink.

Quero has appeared with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, MDR Sinfonieorchester, NDR Radiophilharmonie Hanover, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Zurich Chamber Orchestra, Vienna Chamber Orchester, Munich Chamber Orchestra, Kammerakademie Potsdam, the Sao Paulo Symphony, among others. He has also given chamber music performances in Vienna, Salzburg, Baden-Baden, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, Hanover, Valencia, Cologne, and Vancouver, and at international festivals in Gstaad, Jerusalem, as well as the Heidelberger Frühling, the Lucerne Festival, the Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Rheingau Musik Festival.

During the 2010-11 season, Quero was nominated as a Rising Star by the European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO), and performed on ECHO's Rising Stars Series throughout concert halls in Brussels, Luxembourg, Vienna, Salzburg, Hamburg, and Amsterdam. Parallel to this tour, his debut CD Shadows was released (Solo Musica) and was awarded the Echo Klassik for Newcomer of the Year. In October 2012, he was awarded his second Echo Klassik, which he received together with his colleagues Sebastian Manz, Marc Trenel, David Alonso Fernandez and Herbert Schuch, for Chamber Music Recording of the Year. In the same year, Quero released The Romantic Oboist, (Genuin) with pianist Kateryna Titova. In 2015 his solo album Bach: New Oboe Sonatas (EDEL) was released. Ramón Ortega Quero is a fellowship award-winner of the Borletti Buitoni Trust London.

About the Colburn School

The Colburn School comprises four academic units united by a single philosophy that all who desire to study music and dance should have access to top-level training. The degree-granting Conservatory of Music, the Community School of Performing Arts, the Music Academy for pre-college musicians, and the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute provide performing arts training to over 2,000 students from the Los Angeles area and around the world. The Community School of Performing Arts acts as an entry point to performing-arts education, offering beginning to pre-collegiate training in music and drama to students of all ages and skill levels. The Trudl Zipper Dance Institute includes dance instruction for young people and adults in ballet, tap, modern, and musical theater. Also part of the Trudl Zipper Dance Institute is the pre-professional Dance Academy, which prepares a select class of young dancers for careers in ballet.

Young musicians from around the world study at the Music Academy, which prepares high-school aged students for further training at the world's top conservatories. Finally, the Conservatory of Music is one of the preeminent training grounds for classical musicians, with undergraduate and advanced degrees in music performance. The Conservatory provides full financial scholarships, including tuition, room, and board for all students.

A robust community engagement initiative delivers performing arts education to low-income students in the surrounding areas through outreach and scholarship programs. Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Colburn School's campus boasts state-of- the-art performance and rehearsal spaces. Each season, the school presents over 300 concerts and performances, many of which are free and open to the public, at its downtown home and throughout Southern California.
