Many of the theatre basics are being taught this spring in the curriculum of Center Theatre Group's Theatre 101, a series of six free workshops taught by professionals that introduce students to acting, directing, playwriting, costuming, stage combat and comedy.

Theatre 101 is presented by CTG's Education and Community Partnerships department, whose Student Body program regularly brings free workshops to students on a variety of subjects.

The Theatre 101 workshops begin February 17 and are held during after-school hours, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. The workshops are open to students ages 13 through 18. The locations for the workshops are in downtown Los Angeles, Central L.A. and Boyle Heights.

Students can sign up for the workshops by emailing StudentBody@CenterTheatreGroup.org with the following details: the workshop the student would like to attend, the student's full name, email address, school grade and phone number. No prior theatre experience is necessary.

The Student Body is a mailing list for 13-23 year olds who are interested in the arts. Student Body members hear about free workshops, specially priced ticket offers and chances to mingle with peers at events designed for, by and about the next generation.

The Theatre 101 Workshops include "Intro to Acting," Tuesday, February 17 at the Edward Roybal Learning Center, downtown Los Angeles; "Intro to Stage Combat," Wednesday, February 25 at the Music Center Annex, 601 W. Temple St., downtown Los Angeles; "Intro to Costuming," Thursday, March 5 at Theodore Roosevelt Senior High School, Boyle Heights; "Intro to Directing," Wednesday, March 11 at the Music Center Annex; "Intro to Comedy," Tuesday, march 24 at Thomas Jefferson High School, Central Los Angeles; and "Intro to Playwriting," Wednesday, April 8 at the Music Center Annex. Students must RSVP to attend the workshops. More information is available at CenterTheatreGroup.org/StudentBody.

CTG's Education and Community Partnerships department, led by Leslie K. Johnson, is one of the most active theatre education programs in the country, reaching close to 20,000 students, teachers and community members throughout Southern California. The department is dedicated to the development of artists, educators, community members and young people's skills and creativity through the exploration of theatre, its literature, art and imagination.
