CAST LIST



*Esther: 35, African-American. A seamstress in New York City, Esther sews intimate apparel for

ladies of all levels of society. She is single, but she desires to marry and has saved for eighteen

years to open a beauty shop for African-American women.



Mrs. Dickson: 50s, African-American. Widowed Mrs. Dickson owns the boarding house where

Esther lives.



Mrs. Van Buren: 30s, white American. A wealthy woman in her thirties, Mrs. Van Buren orders

fancy corsets from Esther.



Mr. Marks: 30s, Romanian Jewish immigrant. Fabric seller in his thirties, Mrs. Marks shares a

connection with Esther.



*Mayme: 30s, African-American. A prostitute and pianist, Mayme, through her lingerie orders,

has become good friends with Esther.



George: 30s, Barbadian immigrant. George initiates a correspondence with Esther while he is working to build the Panama Canal. He eventually comes to New York City and marries Esther.



*Please note: The role of Mayme requires proficiency in piano. The roles of both Mayme and Esther require singing, beginner singers are encouraged to audition.
