Nagamandala is an elaborate and spectacular ritual of serpent worship in Modern south India. Naga means serpent and mandala implies decorative pictorial drawings on the floor. The play depicts the divine union of male and female snakes. However, here the union was not with another snake, it was the union of a snake in the form of a human with another human. It is a story within a story narrated by Story (a character) to a playwright condemned to die if he is unable to stay awake the whole night. The piece explores human relationships, gender identities and the female psyche.
