"StageDoor" 2013 featuring Naseeruddin Shah's "Ismat Apa Ke Naam"
Ismat Apa Ke Naam is a series of three short stories -- Mughal Bacche, Chhui Muee and Gharwali -- narrated with élan and gusto by the trio. The beauty of the entire experience lies not just in the manner in which the stories are narrated by the actors but by the sheer luminosity, irony and poignancy of the stories themselves. And for that, one has to turn to the author herself. Ismat Chughtai or Ismat Apa as she was known, was a leading figure of the progressive writers' movement. In fact, some of the earliest feminist writing in this country can be credited to her.
'Chhui Muee' told by Heeba Shah, is a tribute to the power of the rural women, expressed thru an incident of childbirth witnessed by three fascinated and differently affected women, in a compartment. A first person account, it could well be a personal experience of the writer.
'Mughal Bachcha' told by Ratna Pathak Shah, talks about the so - called succesorss of the great Mughals; the landed gentry of Uttar Pradesh, in the time of the British Raj, unable to come to terms with their declining status, and desperately clinging on to the tattered remnants of their ancestor's past glory. Within this wry and perspective social commentary is interwoven a love story of epic proportions; the story of 'Gori Bi' and 'Kaley Mian'
'Gharwali' told by Naseeruddin Shah, is a head satire on the institution of marriage as well as on the social mores of the times (the 40's) and the amazing thing is that Ismat Apa's observations on the nature of human relationships are as pungent and ring as true today as they did when she was first writing and enraging the herds of male chauvinists she was, in all probability, surrounded by.
