ONCE

Book by Enda Walsh

Music & Lyrics by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová

Music Direction by Matt Deitchman

Directed and Choreographed by Katie Spelman

Notes from the Music Director: Instruments we are specifically interested in for ONCE are typical Irish Trad instruments, including (but not necessarily limited to): Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Ukelele, Violin, Cello, Piano, Accordion, Percussion (Cajón & Drum Set)

REGARDING MUSICAL ABILITY: We welcome submissions from people of all musical backgrounds - the music of Once straddles the worlds of folk, Irish trad, and rock, so while advanced instrumental/vocal proficiency will be required for some tracks, the most valuable musical asset is experience in ensemble-based music-making and storytelling.

SEEKING:

GIRL: plays intermediate piano; is concise, brief, poignant, with an odd sense of humor. Knows who she is and what she wants - just trying to find the best way through the world. Czech (Eastern European) accent. BIPOC actors are encouraged to submit for this role.

GUY: plays advanced guitar; A struggling Irish musician. Lost and a bit sad, but extremely appealing. Works with his Da in a vacuum repair shop. Irish Accent.

BARUSKA: girl's mom; a brusque but kind woman with a kooky sense of humor. Plays varying instruments, possibly including accordion and concertina. BIPOC actors are encouraged to submit for this role.

DA: Plays mandolin; Guy's wise and stoic father who wants the best for his son.

EMCEE: the emcee of the bar; a person about town, everyone knows them. Keeper of the chaos. Young, scrappy, and delightful, plays multiple instruments. Irish accent.

SVEC: plays advanced percussion (Drum kit +); A real oddball. Loves television and coffee. Very endearing. Czech (Eastern European) accent.

ANDREJ: plays advanced bass and guitar. Earnest and kind. An employee at a fast-food chain, but has big dreams. Czech (Eastern European) accent.

BILLY: plays advanced/intermediate guitar; the funny and charismatic owner of the music store where Girl plays piano. Loud, funny, and protective of Girl but also has a vulnerability. Irish Accent.

BANK MANAGER: plays advanced cello. Seems quite prim and proper but has a secret passion for music. Irish accent.

REZA: plays advanced violin. A sexy, funny, smart Czech girl. Often a bit larger than life. Czech (Eastern European) accent.

EX-GIRLFRIEND: plays advanced violin. Guy’s ex-girlfriend who now lives in New York. Kind, lovely and personable. Czech (Eastern European) accent.
