BREAKDOWN

SYNOPSIS: Over 40% of all the mushrooms we eat in this country come from a tiny region of Pennsylvania around the town of Kennett Square. MUSHROOM centers on the lives, loves, families and working conditions of the Mexican and Central American mushroom pickers there, examining the recent strains placed on this cultural community. It uses a series of experiments in form and non-linear storytelling to explore immigrant experiences, the characters' dreams and fears.

MUSHROOM began in collaboration with People’s Light in 2013. The commission was for the playwright to imagine a new play grounded by stories of people living in its radius of Chester County. Davis was immediately drawn to the mystery of the area’s mushroom industry—who are the people who have moved these fungi from farm to table for decades? And what are the challenges they face given their gender, family history, sexuality, income, immigration status? Continued community conversations have been crucial to carve the fictional work into a shape that reflects those realities and dreams. An experiment in narrative, mapping instances where compassion and justice might intersect, the overall intention of the play is to center the experiences of a particular set of working people, to recognize and celebrate their personhood.

NOTE: The play is in both English and Spanish, there are a few sections in Malayalam, K’iche, and Spanish where there will be no translation.
