What’s your fantasy? Ana knows that everybody has one—her especially, and she’d do anything to make it come true. And when she meets Jonah, a sweet and caring student at her boarding school, everything she’s ever wanted is finally falling into place. Except Jonah, like everything else in this moving world premiere play from Rachel Bonds, is not all that he seems. A singularly haunting and heart-racing coming-of-age tale that will keep you guessing until its final twisting moments, Jonah is about the true cost of survival, and the lengths some will travel to feel just a little less alone in the world.
ANA, (18+, character ages from 16-30's). Deeply intelligent and dry, she is a girl and then a woman with a vivid interior life that she shows to precious few. Raised on the outskirts of Detroit, she is on scholarship at a boarding school, where she takes comfort only in books, writing, and the safety of her dorm room. She is privately intrigued by her own sexuality and also terrified of it. When she meets Jonah, her guarded exterior starts to give way to vulnerability and desire. Once in her thirties, her once-guarded exterior hardens into armor.
JONAH, (character is 18+) A funny, strange, sensitive boy who has somehow carved a niche for himself in this world. A social chameleon, he is liked by everyone but not deeply known by anyone. He stays above the fray with his odd and charming sense of humor, but below the charisma he carries a well of grief. He is unabashedly interested in Ana and somehow his gaze feels thrilling and safe at the same time.
DANNY, (18+, character ages from 17 to 20’s). Ana’s troubled stepbrother, who teeters between fierce masculinity and childlike vulnerability. He is a wounded animal, the most frequent target of his father’s abuse, a boy who tries in his own limited way to do the right thing. He is unpredictable and spikey, but can also be tender and loveable.
STEVEN, 30's/early 40's. Self-deprecating and disarmingly earnest, a kind and wounded soul who carries his own troubled sexual history. He’s a journalist and is curious about all things, particularly Ana. Persistently and almost compulsively makes jokes to hide his vulnerability. He is magnetically drawn to Ana and in awe of her artistry, unwaveringly persistent in his desire to know her.
