by Lynn Nottage directed by Kate Whoriskey

1st Reh: 06/25/2019 Opening: 08/02/2019 Closing: 08/25/2019

All roles open

FLOYD White woman – 40s-50s. Restaurant owner. “all steel, unmovable. The gravel in her voice betrays a lifetime of cigarettes and whiskey, a life lived with gusto and no apology.”
All of her employees in the restaurant are ex-cons. She also did time, but we’re not sure for what.

The restaurant staff:

MONTRELLES African American Man - 28-35. The “chef”. Rumor is that he did time on principle. Totally in charge. Very Zen. Teaches other workers to “leve the pain in the pan.” He makes a sandwich art.
“everything Montrelle touches is sublime.”

JASON White Man - 28-35. Single character carried over from Sweat. Did time for assault. Covered with racist tats from prison. Totally lost. Living in a tent in the woods. Has nothing and not sure how he can start over.

RAFAEL Latino Man - 28-35. Did time for “armed” (BB gun) robbery (before Christmas – he wanted to buy his girlfriend a fur coat). Tough with a soft edge. Strong sense of humor. Very caring with Letitia

LETITIA African American Woman - 28-35. Single mother. Did time for robbery. She broke into a pharmacy to get seizure medication for her daughter, but took a little too much of some other stuff. Tough, on edge, frustrated with life. Totally offended by Jason’s tats and what she assumes is his attitude.

THEY ARE ALL JUST TRYING TO KEEP THEIR JOBS.
