Breakdown
SEEKING
Matilda Wormwood (8–11): A brilliant and imaginative girl with exceptional intelligence and quiet strength; anchors the show with emotional depth, strong comedic instincts, and stamina. Vocal range A3–D5 with confident belt; strong mover with excellent diction and storytelling ability. Role may be double cast.
Miss Agatha Trunchbull (35–60): The tyrannical, larger-than-life headmistress, traditionally played by a male but flexible depending on production vision. Requires commanding physical presence, bold character work, strong belt (A2–G4), and fearless comic commitment. Must balance menace with heightened theatricality.
Miss Honey (20s–30s): A gentle, kind-hearted teacher with emotional vulnerability and inner resilience. Requires warm lyrical soprano (F3–D5), sincere acting depth, and grounded stillness; “My House” is the emotional centerpiece. Light movement ability required.
Mr. Wormwood (30s–50s): Matilda’s brash and dishonest used-car salesman father with big physical comedy and fast-paced delivery. Vocal range C3–A4; strong comedic timing and character singing required. Energetic mover with vaudeville-style flair.
Mrs. Wormwood (30s–50s): A flamboyant, image-obsessed amateur ballroom dancer who prioritizes dance and appearance over parenting. Requires strong belt (A3–F5) and confident ballroom/Latin dance ability. Bold comedic instincts and heightened physicality essential.
Mrs. Phelps (40+): Warm and grounded librarian who frames Matilda’s storytelling sequences. Strong character with clear diction and gentle presence. Serves as emotional bridge between fantasy and reality.
Rudolpho (20s–40s): Mrs. Wormwood’s flamboyant dance partner with strong Latin/ballroom technique and comedic presence. Vocal range D3–A4; featured in “Loud.” Must be athletic, charismatic, and comfortable with stylized character work.
Cast from Ensemble:
- The Escapologist (20s–40s): High lyric baritone. The headlining Escape Artist in the circus; a showman and loving parental figure in Matilda’s imagination. Good physical storyteller. Requires movement ability and emotional sincerity. Aerial skills a plus.
- The Acrobat: A graceful, lyrical character within Matilda’s fantasy world; strong mover with expressive acting skills. Requires physical storytelling and emotional warmth. Aerial skills a plus.
- Adult Ensemble: Adult ensemble members portray parents, students, ballroom competitors, school staff, doctors, and fantasy characters. Strong triple-threat performers with excellent ensemble singing and movement skills are required.
