BWW Reviews: Otterbein's DAMES AT SEA a Loving Tribute to a Bygone Era
by Paul Batterson - July 18, 2014
DAMES AT SEA is listed as a parody of the Busby Berkley musicals of the 1930s but the Otterbein University's production of the George Haimsohn and Robin Miller musical comes across as a loving tribute than a skewering of the glitzy, style-over substance musicals.
Short North Stage Announces 2014-15 Season - SUNSET BOULEVARD, FUGITIVE SONGS and More
by BWW News Desk - July 14, 2014
Short North Stage will present its 2014-15 season starting on October 2 with Sunset Boulevard, the musical version of Billy Wilder's Academy Award-winning 1950 movie of the same name. The score by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is considered by many to be one of his finest. The book and lyrics are by Don Black and Christopher Hampton. Sunset Boulevard is a Hollywood legend about a faded 1920s silent-screen star, Norma Desmond, who lives in a decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street. A chance meeting with a down-and-out screenwriter, Joe Gillis, feeds into her dream of writing a film that will be her comeback to the silver screen. Winning Tony Awards on Broadway for Best Musical, Best Book and Score and Best Actress in 1995, Sunset Boulevard opened originally in London starring Patti LuPone and later productions featured such stars as Betty Buckley, Glenn Close, Diahann Caroll and Petula Clark. Actor Hugh Jackman made his first stage splash as Joe Gillis in the Australian production. Performances run from Oct 2-19 on the Garden Theater Main Stage.

BWW Reviews: Rain Doesn't Cool off the Legends of Classic Rock with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
by Paul Batterson - June 30, 2014
Don't tell John Elefante that violins don't belong in rock and roll. The former Kansas front man came from a rock band where the violin was essential to the band's sound. Elefante and the Legends of Classic Rock incorporated the Columbus Symphony Orchestra into a rain delayed set of rock standards during a Picnic at the Pops concert at the Columbus Commons.
BWW Reviews: THE 39 STEPS a Twisted Path to Mindless Fun
by Paul Batterson - June 27, 2014
At the beginning of Otterbein University's production of THE 39 STEPS, Richard Hannay is desperate for a diversion from the dullness of his life in London. 'I wanted to do something mindless and trivial, so I went to the theater,' says Hannay, the central character in the Christina Kirk directed production. It's a perfect introduction for what is to follow: a show that is equal parts farce, film noir and romantic comedy.

BWW Reviews: An Odd Pairing Makes for a Unique Night for Ben Folds and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
by Paul Batterson - June 24, 2014
At first glance, Ben Folds and Albert-George Schram would appear to have nothing in common. Schram, a white-haired maestro with a greying mustache and a soft smile, is the Resident Staff Conductor of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra. Folds, the bespectacled pop star/pianist with an acerbic sense of humor, makes a living with acidic love songs and often off-color storytelling.

by Christina Mancuso - June 20, 2014
They say that everyone has a twin somewhere in the world. Well, I'm sure that Ethel Merman is proudly smiling down at hers as Heather Carvel boldly tackles the role of a lifetime in the World Premiere of Warehouse Theatre Company's BIG VOICE: THE ETHEL MERMAN EXPERIENCE. Directed, conceived and written by Kristofer Green, every look, nuance, expression, and style is exactly dead-on, from hair to dress to even the way Ethel raised her eyebrows and smiled after a song.
