The Mikado is one of Gilbert and Sullivan's most famous and frequently performed operettas. Premiering in 1885, it remains a classic of the genre. Set in the fictional Japanese town of Titipu, The Mikado is a satirical comedy that pokes fun at British society and politics of the time, disguised within the exotic setting of Japan. The story revolves around the wandering minstrel Nanki-Poo, his love for the maiden Yum-Yum, the bumbling executioner Ko-Ko, and the whims of the titular Mikado. New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players has staged numerous productions of The Mikado over the years, bringing their own flair and interpretation to this timeless classic. With colorful costumes, lively choreography, and impeccable vocal performances, NYGASP’s productions of The Mikado have delighted audiences and contributed to the enduring popularity of Gilbert & Sullivan’s works.
