There are comedies, horror films, romances, romantic comedies and even horror comedies. But a romantic horror comedy that's based on......Shakespeare? It's all true with Warm Bodies, which takes a comedic jab at the post-apocolyptic world of flesh-eating zombies.
After R (a highly unusual zombie) saves Julie from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.
The story is based loosely on Romeo and Juliet. "R" = "Romeo"; "Julie" = "Juliet; "Perry" = "Paris"; "M/Marcus" = "Mercutio"; "Nora" = Juliet's "Nurse" (the character of Nora is also a nurse). When R is talking to Julie outside her house the scene is referencing to the balcony scene of Romeo and Juliet. R (Romeo) is talking to Julie (Juliet) on the balcony.
With all of genre mashup that's going on with this film, one might think it would turn out as an incohesive mess. But Warm Bodies is a delightful film with a light-hearted approach, but without the slapstick found in the Scary Movie series. And the chemistry between the lead roles of R and Julie is unmistakeable. If you missed Warm Bodies in its first-run release, then you should 'warm up' to the idea of seeing it at The Strand!
