The Metropolitan Opera will premiere a new production of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov on October 11, starring René Pape as Boris and conducted by Valery Gergiev. Pape, who has performed the title role to great acclaim in his native Germany, will make his American role debut under the baton of Gergiev, widely recognized as the world's leading conductor of Russian opera. Stephen Wadsworth, who won praise for his productions of Rodelinda and Iphigénie en Tauride in recent seasons, will direct the Met's first new production of the opera since 1974.

René Pape will be the toast of the opera world again this season when he assumes two of his signature roles on two of the world's greatest stages: the title role of Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov in a new production at New York's Metropolitan Opera (Oct 11-30) and Wotan in Wagner's Die Walküre as part of the ongoing Ring cycle at Milan's La Scala (Dec 7 - Jan 2).

Franco Zeffirelli's production, an audience favorite since 1981, will be conducted by Roberto Rizzi Brignoli in his Met debut.

Opera Grows in Brooklyn Presents Evening Featuring OPERA ELVIS 10/18

Two Brooklyn opera companies, American Opera Projects (AOP) and Opera On Tap (OOT), will present the sixth installment of their 'Opera Grows in Brooklyn' series, a 90-minute evening of opera scenes and songs. The evening will feature OPERA ELVIS: A LAMENT FOR THE KING a classical take on the works of Elvis Presley; scenes from HENRY'S WIFE by composer Randall Eng and ROSENKRANTZ AND GUILDENSTERN ARE DEAD, based on the play by Tom Stoppard and adapted as an opera by composer/librettist Herschel Garfein; and 'A Poem Written For the Concrete Beneath the Bridge' by Caleb Burhans. The show will be held on Monday, October 18 at 8pm at Galapagos Art Space in Brooklyn's DUMBO neighborhood. Tickets are $20 ($15 for students/seniors) in advance at www.galapagosartspace.com and $25 at the door.

Opera San José continues its 27th Season with Giacomo Puccini's powerfully dramatic opera, Tosca. The story of a popular opera diva brought down by the chief of Rome's secret police, Tosca always leaves its audiences startled and breathless by the searing beauty of Puccini's melodies. Giuseppe Verdi's popular masterpiece Rigoletto returns to the Met this season featuring five artists in their Met debuts and four performers singing major roles for the first time with the company. On September 29, Lado Ataneli sings the hunchback court jester and Christine Schäfer is his daughter Gilda, both adding new roles to their Met repertory. Conductor Paolo Arrivabeni makes his Met debut, as does Francesco Meli as the Duke of Mantua, Nino Surguladze as Maddalena, and Andrea Silvestrelli as Sparafucile. On October 5, George Gagnidze returns to the role of Rigoletto which he sang at the Met in 2009.

Beginning on October 27, New York City Opera will present Parallel Perceptions, a contemporary art exhibition that features the works of six visual artists that have been paired with productions from City Opera's 2010-11 season, including Leonard Bernstein's A Quiet Place; Richard Strauss's Intermezzo; Donizetti's The Elixir of Love; three one-act operas (Monodramas) by John Zorn, Arnold Schoenberg, and Morton Feldman; and Stephen Schwartz's Séance on a Wet Afternoon. Curated by accomplished artist and photo editor Naomi Ben-Shahar, the exhibition will take place during the fall and spring seasons and includes a series of additional paintings, sculptures, and photographs by Charles Ray, Pipilotti Rist, Tina Barney, Isaac Julian, Dash Snow and Kehinde Wiley.
