Anita Rachvelishvili will make her Met debut in the title role of Carmen on January 5, 2011, replacing Kate Aldrich, who has withdrawn due to pregnancy. Rachvelishvili also sings Carmen on January 8 and 13.

Rachvelishvili first sang Carmen at La Scala's opening night on December 7, 2009 in a new production conducted by Daniel Barenboim. That performance was televised throughout Europe. She has also sung the role for her North American debut with the Canadian Opera in Toronto, and at the Berlin State Opera. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, she joined the young artist program of La Scala in 2007.
Carmen, conducted by Edward Gardner, also stars Genia Kühmeier as Micaela, Roberto Alagna as Don José, and Paulo Szot as Escamillo.
