Two of the greatest performances of our time will be no more this Sunday.
RIP GREY GARDENS. 7.29.2007. You'll be missed.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
--Aristotle
Listening to the cast recording today I got a little teary-eyed thinking about the fact that it's closing during the reprise of "Around the World". I feel so fortunate to have been able to see it mutliple times and will cherish it.
"It's the most disgusting, atrocious thing EVER to happen in America!" I am so sad this piece of brilliance is closing. If Ebersole tours the US with Grey Gardens, I am following the show in a van and becoming an "Eb-Head".
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
Seeing the show last Saturday, everyone who saw it with me agreed it's a shame that it's closing. And the fact that these two brilliant performances won't be recorded is a crime.
Goodbye GREY GARDENS. You'll be missed.
I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.
Here's to the most beautiful, emotional show I've ever seen on Broadway. I will be at the closing show Sunday, probably bawling my eyes out. I was at the show tonight, and was actually in physical pain.
"This table, he is over one hundred years old. If I could, I would take an old gramophone needle and run it along the surface of the wood. To hear the music of the voices. All that was said." - Doug Wright, I Am My Own Wife
Why exactly did it close? Almost everyone I know absolutely adored it, and the others had no idea what it was, but off point.
I feel so bad for Ebersole. She so deserved a longer run, she's amazing in the show. I'm so sad I didn't get to see it. If anyone wants to take me, I am totally free. :)
I'd hate to be there closing night, though. If I were in it, I'd be sobbing through half my songs.
