Blind item from @deuxmoi that a red-headed actress, known for her love of musical theatre, will play the lead in an upcoming film adaptation of NEXT TO NORMAL. Thoughts or ideas?

That's gotta be Amy Adams, right? The only other A-list redhead is Jessica Chastain, and while she can certainly sing she hasn't done any traditional musicals.

The pseudonym on the blind item is Leslie Miller and Amy Adams played Leslie Miller on Drop Dead Gorgeous.

I love Amy, she’s a great actress, but she doesn’t have the vocal chops for the score. I’m not up for another dumbed down score that gets enhanced in the studio. Boo.

Too bad they didn’t cast Pink or someone who can wail a rock score.

Exactly. Or can we go back to dubbing? I’m kind of over the trend of thin auto tuned non-singers taking on powerhouse roles.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

From what I've heard from someone close to Yorkey, he has been waiting for some distance in his career between the broadway production and his work in Hollywood to focus on the film adaptation. He was very passionate about directing the adaptation himself at one point

All I want for this is a solid A24 vibe that embraces the horror aspects.

I didn’t realize this was actually happening. If it really is, count me in as someone who is incredibly excited.

Amy is perfect for this. People who say she isn’t up to the singing have clearly never seen her in Into the Woods. She is wonderful singing live. I can’t think of a better movie actor to tackle this role.

You’ve clearly never heard Amy Adams sing live, or you wouldn’t be making such an uninformed statement about dumbing down the score. But considering you think Pink, who has zero acting experience, should play one of the most challenging acting roles written for the musical theatre, I’m wouldn’t be surprised if most of your opinions are uninformed.

First, Pink has acted before so your “zero” comment is uninformed and makes you look foolish. She has been in film and television projects and is one of the most primal vocalists. She conveys raw emotions on a visceral level beautifully. Most of Diana’s hardest scenes are delivered in song. Pink could handle this challenge exquisitely

Second, Amy has a great voice. No denying it She doesn’t have a rock voice. I’ve seen her sing many times including that Defying Gravity karaoke in which the belt isn’t quite there. I just don’t want her belt cleaned up in the studio. That completely takes the teeth out of the score. That’s all I’m saying.

Oh, really? Please share with the group some highlights of Pink’s acting resume, particularly the ones that make you think she’s qualified to play Diana. I’m looking at her IMDb profile, and I’m not seeing anything but music videos and a couple appearances playing rock singers in movies and a voiceover role in Happy Feet Two. She is completely unqualified, and the suggestion that she is is downright stupid.

Someone needs to call a wellness check on Glenn Close and her Sunset film

So who does James Marsden play? Are you even allowed to do a movie musical and not cast him?

I NEVER notice these things but I literally saw Toni Collette in public last week and I actually think her face has Alice Ripley vibes.

I always thought Toni would be great for this. But you know what, if Amy gets it made, then good. I hope it happens.

And with Sunset, isn't the main hurdle Paramount? It has to be a studio film, and theirs. She could probably get an independent film made.

For a while, I was thinking that a film adaptation should be directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda starring Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal.
