Macbeth took a nasty hit. As I mentioned in last week’s thread, I’m really curious to know whether it will recoup; if so, it would be one of the few plays this season that makes it, and it’s an interesting case study of mega-star casting in an otherwise inaccessible and poorly-received production (Funny Girl is in a similar boat, and I’m similarly curious about it, but it’s not on as tight of a time frame as Macbeth).
It seems like it’s probably gonna be a photo finish either way, but this week’s gross really makes me wonder if they’re stumbling at the finish line after a really strong “head start.”
Also, happy to see Company getting a nice bump, even if it was (at least partially) for an unfortunate reason.
And Beetlejuice continues to prove, as least for now, that they didn’t midjudge the demand for a return engagement.

I feel like it's a combination of a poor choice of theatre, the assumed content of the play at face value, and the fact that it was a VERY late entry into the season with little fanfare beforehand.
I also don't see any advertising for it on the major stations in NYC - probably because the the title is a little problematic (although that could be abridged like they did with The Motherf***** with the Hat a decade ago).

Not particularly surprising at all why POTUS is struggling. As mentioned, its title is an immediate "no" for a not insignificant swath of people. And a line up of b-list actors does not a star-driven hit make. We all love each of the women in the show, but they all add up to a lot of not much by way of box office draw. As for lack of advertising, well when the money dries up, that's the first thing to go. And TV is especially costly for any show, much less a play.
Was Hugh back in MM? (I'm assuming that's the reason for the bump back to "normal".
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Hugh came back from the Wednesday matinee on. So 7 shows for him and 1 for Max (Tuesday).
Presumably, the box office figures will likely go back to pre-covid levels ( around $ 3.4 M + per week) by next week. To-date, the show has registered $79,486,584.26 at the box office (per Playbill). The show opened for previews on Dec 20, 2021 but had to close for 10 days when Hugh was first infected with covid-19.
They were already back to 3.2 in the current grosses.

People will see good theater anywhere so I don't think the theater has anything to do with it. People want to escape and not be reminded of the horrors of our political climate these last 6 years. And the other half of the country would never see theater anyways. It's wild that anyone wouldn't understand that and thinks everyone is just like them and would LOVE this. Nope.
1) These are not bankable stars, as many of us have said from the beginning. They rushed this to Broadway with whoever was available. Even with Lucy Liu in Suzy N's part (as initially planned) it wouldn't have made a dollar more than it is now. This is a bigger problem than the limited lead-time before previews.
2) It's an awful title. People expect something preachy or historically relevant, when the play really isn't that. Even titling it something along the lines of "Seven Women Trying to Keep One Dumbass Alive" might have been better. It's on the producers for not exerting their control and having the title changed.
3) It's just not a very good play. It's funny and well-performed, but it's complete fluff, and that's not enough to sell tickets these days.
There's been no shortage of press coverage and mixed-to-favorable reviews about the play. The general public simply does not care to spend proper money on this title and these actors.
Macbeth is alternating between eight shows one week and seven the next, which makes week-to-week comparisons weird. Their capacity percentage went up and is the highest in four weeks but the average ticket price has dropped. They're back to eight shows next week.

I mean, people have been saying that for weeks and here we are. I can't imagine The Minutes and POTUS won't finish out their runs with only a few weeks left (especially POTUS, as I'm sure the Shuberts don't want their flagship empty during the hot tourist months).
Paradise Square seems to have defied all prognostication and financial common sense - so it seems like a fruitless effort to actually bet they will close any time soon since we've been doing that since late April/early May when the 10 Tony Award nominations did diddly-squat for the show itself.

There's rumors going around that Come From Away may extend it's closing by a few weeks. They appear to be doing well now since they announced it. Anyone know if it might be true?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I’ve heard producers have been considering pushing back closing based on 1) popular demand, and 2) the fact that they want to end up with a longer run than Dear Evan Hansen.

LIVING for the pettiness. Would love to see it outrun DEH simply for the chuckle factor.
I saw POTUS on Saturday (2nd time) for my birthday; went with two friends. They both enjoyed it and said at intermission that they have never heard of the show outside me talking about it; they live in north Jersey right outside the city. The theatre was definitely not full. It’s a shame because it truly is one of the funniest shows with a cast who is giving it their all. Funnily enough, we overheard the girls sitting next to us say “I heard her brother is on Dancing With The Stars” (about Julianne Hough) - how they could know who Derek is but not Julianne was sort of mind blowing but it just goes to show - the cast doesn’t seem to be too well known!

Except they don't need to extend in order to outrun DEH. According to IBDB, as of June 19, 2022 Come From Away has played 25 previews and 1,550 performances to Dear Evan Hansen's 21 previews and 1,466 performances. And with Come From Away currently scheduled to close two weeks after Dear Evan Hansen, a longer run is pretty much an inevitability (barring any COVID cancellations and/or any other unforeseen circumstances).
I'm sure there was a deciding factor in having Potus go to the Shubert. No one with a right mind would put a play in the same size theater as Bette Midler in Dolly.

Correct. Shockingly, real adults don't open or close shows based on "pettiness".
