I have to say, I didn’t care for them breaking and now knowing that it’s not even real makes me like it even less. What a weird thing.

I agree. I have never been a fan of regular character breaks that are staged and happen nightly. I remember this used to be a common occurrence in Hairspray productions during You're Timeless to Me. I was glad that when I saw the current national tour of Hairspray, that they cut that.

Any word on a cast recording? I don't see a thread on it. It seems pretty much inconceivable that it wouldn't get one, given the fan bases for Hugh/Sutton.

After the show they did the BCEFA speech. They raised $60,000 in one night!!!!!! Three people generously split the prize $20k each!!!!!! I have never seen anyone raise this much money in a single performance, and this excludes the Red bucket brigade. The bidders went home with signed gloves and a poster (one screamed they were in it for Sutton’s autograph, not Hugh’s - which got a hilarious reaction from the audience and everyone on stage, especially Sutton who mouthed “what is happening!!!!” And she started kissing the gloves as Hugh joked they had their DNA on them), and the third person ended up with a signed whistle and poster.
"

Were they selling the autographed posters by themselves? How much are they going for? Thx for the review!

I'm finally going to see 'Music Man' this weekend and remember the previews were met with lukewarm reactions by many. I'm wondering how much they really changed/improved the show by the end of previews, as many expected or at least hoped?

The reasons for it being lukewarm aren't likely to change - its a "nice" production of a "nice" show.  It brought nothing new to the table.   It's an enjoyable evening, nothing more, nothing less.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

They shortened what had been a lengthy finale to mainly focus on Hugh and Sutton's tap dance, and they cut other areas (including "It's You" from the Barbershop Quartet, which has been mourned by some) to tighten it down to a 2.5 hour show. That's mainly it, and that IS an improvement, but I doubt those changes would move anybody who didn't love it to suddenly love it (or vice versa). Many people, it seems based on ticket sales, are very happy with a pleasant evening being entertained by two huge stars, four other Tony winners, and dozens of young and enthusiastic (and excellent) dancers.

I liked the show much more than I expected to after reading the preview reports.  I have seen it twice now and have another ticket to return in June.  The talent is extraordinary.

I was heartened by Warren Carlyle’s report that they just did a dance clean up of every number last week.

Forgive me if this topic has already been discussed on this thread.

Hugh Jackman's originally scheduled vacations were August, 16-21, September 6-11 and October 11-16.

It seems that the August 16-21 and September 6-11 dates are still blocked off and not on sale. However, the October 11-16 dates are currently on sale (and this includes two performances on Hugh Jackman's 54th Birthday for Wednesday, October 12).

Has Hugh cancelled his vacation for October 11-16 and is he now scheduled to perform on those dates?

Any news on if they plan on recording a cast album?

Just guessing --

the Sept 6-11 break coincides with the announced dates for the Venice & Toronto filmfests ( maybe Telluride, too ?). His new movie THE SON is being released in the fall. Its filmmaker/screenwriter, Florian Zeller, brought his famous first film THE FATHER to various filmfests. It eventually won an Oscar for Zeller & Anthony Hopkins. In THE SON (not a sequel to The Father but an adaptation from one of Zeller's well-known plays), Hugh Jackman plays the central character. It will co-star Laura Dern, Vanessa Kirby & Hopkins in a supporting role.

Maybe THE SON is bound for any or all those filmfests?

Maybe the August blocked dates are for a personal break?

The understudies for Winthrop and Zaneeta were on over the weekend, but the main actors for those roles might be back by tonight. Fingers crossed everything goes well for you.

I don't really see Harold Hill as someone who brings "sexy back" to River City...

Rumour: Justin Timberlake to take over for Hugh Jackman?

It probably would take somebody of that stature with similar cross-over appeal to even keep the show going after Hugh departs.

Wow!!! What a fabulous Saturday night I had at the Winter Garden. I love a big, flashy, tight production and this certainly delivered. Hugh was made for the stage! He really just needs to stay in NYC and not go back to LA. The ensemble was FANTASTIC. I have been waiting to see Sutton live and she certainly delivered!

The sets! The costumes! The dancing! The choreography in the library scene!! I loved it all. The dialogue on those fast talking songs - WOW. The first number got a huge applause, the audience was impressed as well. The whole house was into it. The guy next to me was literally on the edge of his seat for the big numbers, and immediately rose with fervor for curtain.

Lots of criticism here but I think the general populous is thoroughly enjoying this. Mom and her friend were very tepid about paying $250 a ticket but said it was worth every dollar. I gave my seat to someone at the Rum Room in Jan who was holding a window card and had nothing but raves (and almost tears?) about how much she enjoyed the show. I don’t think it’s worth a $699 ticket (a price quoted here, often) but I don’t know anyone paying that. Even the older couple in front of us at the box office buying orchestra I think payed $300ish a ticket, in Feb 2020.

And for what it’s worth, as everyone keeps being up Dolly, the recent Dolly revival did nothing for me. Just not the show for me. So to each their own.

I have an extra free ticket for a “Town Hall” with Hugh Jackman and Sutton Foster from The Music Man at the Winter Garden, June 2, check in 1:15pm, event begins at 2:45pm. This in NOT a ticket to see The Music Man, I’m guessing this is an interview (maybe a chance for the audience to ask questions). Vax, ID, masks required. Feel free to send me PM before 5pm today.

Per MUSIC MAN on Instagram: Rema Webb is leaving the production, being replaced by Kelechi Ezie.
