"The built-in audience" is the key issue –– there is no built-in audience for this play. The key Broadway theater goers decided to skip it, and the play and its advertising/word of mouth wasn't compelling enough to attract an audience that doesn't usually attend theatre.

There is rarely ever marketing outside of NYC for plays, save for online advertising and LIRR/NJ Transit. There is no data that indicates it's useful to spend money there, and plays have finite resources for marketing.

It's amazing that the play made it to Broadway in the first place and lasted this long.

Can anyone confirm if this has an in person rush?  I know about the lottery.  But some people have stated they got rush tickets.  I was going walk to the theater  to ask the box office, but it was so dam cold.  If it does, I may see this for my December 1 trip.

Are there any more talks of this possibly closing? Believe me, I don't want it too as I am quite excited to see it in December, but if it does I'd like to have a battle plan on what show to replace it with. Thanks!

I would have a back up plan anyway just in case it does close. Tickets are refundable so even if you bought a back up plan ticket for the same date/time but end up seeing Chicken & Biscuits, you can get a refund on your back up plan ticket.

Just note that you have to initiate the refund before the show starts (I believe it two hours before start time). Telecharge refunds are much easier to get since there’s a button right on the website. SeatGeek is a little more tricky- I initiated a refund in mid October, ticket was returned to SeatGeek Nov 1, and I’ve yet to a refund even though Jujamycn confirmed a refund was coming. And can’t comment on Ticketmaster.

I caught this on Sunday and thought it was an absolute delight. How beautiful to see a show on Broadway that celebrates Black joy. I hope this will have a long life in regional theatre.

There’s a reason the black playwrights were all thrown up at the beginning of the season. There’s a reason why many responses to the plays haven’t been glowing. There’s a reason minor effort has been put into these shows’ marketing. The reasons aren’t good.

If I was to guess, I feel like it’s because the Broadway powers that be, along with producers, want to look like they are making a great effort to introduce new black playwrights, but then use the failure to maintain audiences and lukewarm reviews as future evidence against black playwrights by arguing “Oh, but there’s no financially lucrative market for this”

That's a shame.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Well dang, I was planning to see that this Saturday. That suddenly seems unlikely.

My back-up is Thoughts of a Colored Man.

I feel like I see Thoughts of a Colored Man everywhere. This show is really out there with their press and marketing. So to me, this train of thought doesn't make much sense. I am. more interested in what the dollar amount of Thoughts of a Colored Man's budget.

I mean when i look at Chicken and Bisquits, I do feel like it is a smaller budget show so the ad spend is going to be less.

The real killer here is going to be Slave Play, they have SVOG funds and I expect full court press!
