I feel it is an entire score of good musical ideas or hook ideas but then he abandons then halfway through the song and the songs just a lot of times...end suddenly. I think it keeps the score from being memorable at all cause theres a lack of cohesion

I just wish they could’ve somehow convinced Danny Elfman to do it. That could’ve been an amazing score.

The score to Beetlejuice was so incredibly bad that when I saw the show I could hardly believe my ears. The entire show gave me a massive headache.

By the way, we almost got a Joe Iconis Beetlejuice. According to him, he was also in the running to write the score. He did one of his spec songs at a concert.

I love the opening number and am so glad this show gave us "Girl Scout"!

I was ready to hate his score after hearing and seeing King Kong. But I actually ended up really liking it.

Almost all of the score is garbage. There is, IMO, only one good song (Dead Mom).

Also agree it’s garbage. And it makes it all the worst knowing we could’ve had a Joe Iconis Beetlejuice. It’s so inane and amateur I just sat there gobsmacked the whole time. Really misguided IMO. Even his score for King Kong was better, and we didn’t even get a cast recording of that!

Oh good another thread where everyone can rehash their takes on Beetlejuice

Beetlejuice is the “Last Jedi” of musical theatre: everyone has a take and they’re all intense in one direction or another.

I know I'm in the minority on this board that mostly enjoys the score we got. I absolutely hated King Kong's writing so I thought it was interesting, they're both quite different. That being said, some of the musical structure is weird- I'm not a music theory aficionado so I may not be quite as versed in this take as I should be, but it's weird that songs like Say My Name have like two/three completely different chorus sections all with different melodies- when Adam and Barbara come in the song towards the end, it completely changes. Parts of it are definitely written weird and I understand a lot of the criticism, personally I think that song in particular is one of the worst in the show. Both No Reason and What I Know Now are absolutely stellar in my opinion.

I didn't know Joe Iconis was up for it originally though and nor have I ever heard that song. Not a huge fan of Joe's work though so I'm sort of glad it went the way it did to be honest... I think the melody is absolutely beautiful but, like many of his songs just can't take the lyrics too seriously. Especially the chorus, being "I'm a strange and unusual girl...". It'd be like if Mean Girls had a song literally called "So Fetch," (Not that Mean Girls' lyrics are much better...) It just doesn't feel like it's anything more than him just "musicalizing" one of the most iconic lines in the movie for the sake of including it. Still super interesting nonetheless and it's a very pretty song- I just don't think it'd fit into a musical.

I think others have mentioned this in the past and please correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Tim Minchin up for it at one point? I think that would've been incredible- I absolutely love Groundhog Day and Matilda and I really he comes back to musicals one day.

proving once again that one person's garbage is another person's work of art. Who knew?

Honestly, I'm pretty much dead-set in the middle when it comes to Beetlejuice. I find parts of its score fun and enjoyable but other parts just plain annoying (read: most of what Beetlejuice himself sings). Personally, I enjoy its score a lot more than the ones from some other shows that have recently been popular with teens, like Dear Evan Hansen and Six.
