Hi Guys,
Me and my 13 year old planning on seeing as many Broadway and off Broadway shows as possible this summer. Kindly suggest appropriate shows for a 13 year old. Thank you so much.
We already saw:

If you’re not averse to plays:

To Kill a Mockingbird

Harry Potter

The Ferryman if mature

I haven’t seen but:

What the Constitution Means to Me

Also Fiddler on the Roof inYiddish

Be More Chill, Prom, What the Constitution Means to Me.

I'd suggest To Kill a Mockingbird but I personally preferred the original book more and your 13 year old would most likely have to read it in high school at some point.

Be More Chill and The Prom if you are here before they close. If you have to choose between the two, I would go with The Prom, although Chill is entertaining.

If your 13 year old is a Potter fan, Cursed Child is a must (I would suggest doing a marathon day).  If you see Cursed Child then PUFFS would be a good show to see also. It is closing this summer too.

Just give the world Love.

Psssst.....she stated she had ALREADY SEEN THOSE SHOWS.  Reading is important.

OP, I would take her to The Prom or Beetlejuice (if she's cool with swearing and dead stuff). Have fun!

Coming soon with my 13 year old. We're doing 5 shows in 10 days:

Hamilton
Dear Evan Hanson
Beetlejuice
Moulin Rouge
Hadestown

PS - Now I'm broke!  But most of the shows, I've opted for partial view front orchs to save some money... I don't have time to do rush and cancellation lines... and I never have luck with digital lotteries.

PPS - We're also seeing the touring version of Come From Away, tonight in Miami.

I'd say To Kill a Mockingbird or Cursed Child, she'll most likely need to read the books these are based off of at least once, and it'll be a great introduction. If you truly can't do plays though, choose Hadestown or The Prom! They're both wonderful.

Thank you so much for the feedback. You think Moulin Rouge isn’t too mature for a 13 year old?

For the sake of providing better answers -- what exactly do you define as appropriate for your thirteen-year-old? Are you referring to stuff that can be considered "inappropriate" (ie. sex/swearing/drugs/etc.), or are you just asking for shows that thirteen-year-olds generally like? If it's the former, it would be helpful for you to define specifically what types of content you do not want your child seeing.

How true, how true! However the fonts here are so faint that sometimes it's hard to decide the words.

From the show's FAQ:

"IS THERE AN AGE MINIMUM?

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is recommended for ages 12 and up."

So while younger ones might not be the show's main demographic, I don't think it'll be too risque, that a 13 year old couldn't handle it.

Shows I've seen:

My Fair Lady - It's closing soon, but a fine production of a classic musical that won't be around again in a long time.

Hadestown - I don't know your 13-year-old, but it's a wonderfully staged new musical that's pretty easy to follow. A bit pricey these days.

The Prom - I didn't love it as much as some on this board, but it's hard to resist by the end. Despite the promotional focus, the musical is more about the Broadway actors, who turn in excellent comic performances, than on the teenagers.

Tootsie - It's a funny show, but a lot of the humor isn't really aimed at young teens.

Come From Away - Well-staged one-act show. Very popular and designed to be uplifting. I saw it on tour.

Ain't Too Proud - It's not a great musical, but the choreography and some of the performances are terrific.

Shows I haven't seen:

Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish: I've heard a lot of wonderful things about this. It's a classic musical. The "in Yiddish" part might be a dealbreaker for a teen.

Mean Girls: It's not supposed to be a great film adaptation, but it's right in the wheelhouse of a 13-year-old.

Beetlejuice: A lot of people say it's great fun.

Harry Potter: If familiar with the books/films.

To Kill a Mockingbird: It's supposed to be very well-done.

There’s some language and violent content.  It’s about the troubles after all.  It’s also a 3 hours plus play with not a lot of action taking place.

I would definitely consider the Cher Show, Harry Potter, Mean Girls, moulin rouge (really anything around that pg 14. Especially if they are mature for their age), Hadestown (Though maybe it might be too “art” inspired), to kill a mockingbird

I still say:

Hamilton
Dear Evan
Beetlejuice
