You all are seriously going to sit here and argue about Gavin's actions, when Evan Hansen, a white boy who lies to get everything he wants with no repercussions and then gets his "anxiety" magically cured, is totally justifiable? Why are more people not seeing this? It's infuriating to me. I've never rooted for Evan. I find him the most unlikable protagonist in recent musical theater history.

It's also sold out until June, so does it even matter who's in it? That said, I'm excited for both of them, I think they'll be great. But I agree with the other poster who wonders whether the faults in the piece will be more apparent with a new lead.

The show is nowhere near "sold out until June."

Plenty of seats after December.   (Not in the orchestra on the dates I poked around at)....but lots in the mezz.

Trensch...well, I guess we don't have to worry about the role wrecking his voice, since it's already wrecked.

Can you elaborate on your comment about Trensch, and what evidence you are basing it on? It's a pretty damning claim.

He sounds fine in Dolly but Barnaby isn't the most challenging of roles.   He was pretty weak in BARE a few years ago, quite off key and often.   But that's all I've seen him in.

i'm honestly so happy that i'm seeing the OBC plus Noah Galvin. I know he's done horrible things but he's extremely talented so i'm just trying my best to seperate the person from the character and actor! i'm excited to see his Evan

Regarding the ongoing hand-wringing I've seen and heard over the show's Platt-less future, and its "flaws being exposed", I'll say this:

1. Ben Platt is giving the single best performance I've ever seen on any stage.

2. Evan's portrayer is indeed central to the success of the show -- yes, I'll concede, more so than many other shows' central characters.

3. I simply don't believe that at the highest level of theater in the world, the gulf between Platt and his replacement(s) will be so great as to send the show into some sort of flaw-exposing tailspin.

Will it be as good to those of us who saw BP?  To quote Jared:  Absolutely not.  But isn't that so often the way after seeing OBC's -- particularly when an actor was instrumental in a character's development?  And yes, maybe Platt is even more "like" his character than most leading actors. But.....

....isn't the only real bar to clear here whether DEH can be a satisfying and moving show to people who never saw Platt?  It's not like Broadway gets covered like politics or even movies or TV.  There won't be mainstream media coverage about how the show just isn't the same these days.  If people leave the Music Box thinking, "Christ, why the hype about that show?"  then yeah, they've got a big problem.  If they leave happy enough, it runs for years.

If there aren't other actors on the planet capable of making that happen, then I'll humbly tip my cap to the critics and doomsdayers.  But I have a fair amount of faith in the material, the producers/casting directors, and these future Evans.

Pot meet kettle.

Criticizing a gay actor's ability to play a straight role on stage convincingly before he even has a chance to show you also goes against what the show stands for.

You don't have to like the guy for the comments he's made but stop being hypocritical and perpetuating the bullying epidemic.

I wonder if Taylor and Noah were offered the gig or if they both had to audition.

I basically had no idea who Noah Galvin was, but it seems he has a history of making some d*ck moves.

The casting of Taylor Trensch surprise me, but isn't shocking, Over the past few years, he's morphed into one of theater's young it boys.  Mazel tov to both.

I think we need to learn & accept the fact that actors, just like every other person in the world, have the capability to grow and develop as a person. You may not like his comments from the past, but I think it is immature to dismiss the idea that he has matured and may not hold the same views anymore. Let's stop holding actors to a higher moral standard than everyone else. You wonder why people seem to be fine at separating performer & person with Christine Ebersole...

You can say that to Noah, himself.  I've seen his acting in “The Burnt Part Boys" and that horrible network show that got canceled.  It's unexciting, unconvincing and extremely pedestrian.  Next.

Excited for the casting of Taylor. This role will certainly challenge him more than Barnaby but I have faith he can do it.

^^Dramamama thank you for commenting on Trensch, I thought I was crazy. Every time I see his name pop up in a cast I'm shocked, because vocally he was a mess in Bare- he was fine in Dolly, but as you said, it isn't a vocally demanding role. I'm really apprehensive about his casting here. It's not an easy sing.

Alexis Smith had to audition for the original Follies. More than one audition. Then took vocal lessons and auditioned again and then got the part and then won the Tony.

Believe me, Taylor and Noah auditioned for this part.

I definitely don't think either of these two were just handed the roles, I don't see why they wouldn't have had to audition for the role. I might go see it again when Taylor takes it over in January just to see another take on the character.

Yeah, it's hard to imagine how Galvin will be able to play a role where something he says gets all blown out of proportion online and he has to deal with the repercussions to the people from whom his actions caused them pain... I plan to see them both.

His interview was not "blown out of proportion".  It was read and horrified people.  For good reason.  S h i t t y people make s h i t t y actors.  Just my opinion.

So dramatic.  No, it's just pretty shocking you would read his interview and support this guy by seeing him.  It's very telling.  Have the best time seeing that gross, sad, lying, horror of a human being.

Thanks, I hope to. Assuming I can score a regular priced ticket for his run... keep banging the drum against him, get people to cancel so I can get in there!
