I'm doing a survey for one of my classes it should only take 2 minutes at most. It's one question. Please rank the shows from 1-4, 1 being your favorite and 4 being your least favorite.

The question is not phrased to allow for only four options.  It doesn't make sense.  The question itself is inclusive of all musicals ever written and many here would not even consider one of those four.

I think you should rephrase the question on the survey page to match the sentiment of the prompt in your post here. Posing a question that's intended to stretch the entire history of an art form but offering only choices that can/could be seen on Broadway this year will create additional incongruities in the data you'll receive from a random survey of this nature.

Here's a question for YOU, Miss Victoria Green:

Seven musicals have won the Pulitzer Prize for drama in addition to Hamilton. Can you name them?

Can you name them all?

If not, tell your professor to flunk you.

No.  If my choice is not one of the four, then I'm unable to answer the question.

I trust that everyone taking the survey has seen those four shows on Broadway?

If this was a survey of the most overrated musicals of all time, I'd happily participate...

What class is the for? Hopefully not statistics. The question as phrased is idiotic. Why refer to "greatest of all time" when all you want is for the responders to rank them? I answered as I'd rank the tiny subset of those four musicals, but I strongly suggest redoing your survey and pose the proper question.

Insert hand into BWW, pull back bloody stump.
But yeah, the question needs to be rephrased to make sense.

yeah it's a badly written question. It should be "which is your favorite of these four musicals that happen to be some of the most financially successful of all time?"

What artscallion said.  I closed it once I saw the choices. I suggest picking up a musical theatre history book (try one of Ethan Mordden's) or rephrasing the question.  And while people are entitled the have their favorites, suggesting that those 4 are all educated suggestions is just bad and lazy research.

I have to be completely honest with you all. This question was intended for non theatre majors and most likely people who had never seen a musical. I tried to pick the most well known musicals so it would be easier for them to answer. People weren't taking the survey seriously and were giving feed back that would mess up my data. I put it on here in the hopes I'd get usable data that I could finish my project. I agree it is not a very fair question to people who love the theatre as much as I do but it was to late to change it. Thank you to everyone who has voted and please if you haven't voted just bare with me for it so I can finish this poll.

I closed out of the first window. Victoria, I see what you're trying to do, but it's deeply flawed. If you ask people for something they believe to be the "_____ of all time," you either need to let them fill in a box or give them all of the options. I'm sorry you're getting a hard time on here, but it's important just as a life lesson to give these kinds of problems consideration.
