I've heard from a few different people that Roundabout is definitely planning on bringing this in as their spring musical in 2017 at Studio 54. Anyone heard the same? Know when they'll announce dates? I hope the Barbra Stresisand movie news doesn't delay the transfer

I heard the same thing... in a thread that was already on BWW. :)

I have a friend at Roundabout and they told me it's definitely not happening. I believe they were in negotiations, but for some reason it fell through. (not sure why...)

I'm sorry I was the bearer of bad news. I know it's pretty sad news. I just watched the production on BroadwayHD and absolutely loved it. My friend said that it's pretty dead in the water at this point but who knows, maybe things will change and it will get picked back up at a later date!

Roundabout doesn't usually produce shows like Gypsy because they feel those shows deserve a commercial production. Maybe Lincoln Center Theatre could pick it up.

Nothing about this post makes sense. What do you know about what Roundabout thinks Gypsy "deserves"?

Wasn't there also some talk of BAM bringing this in? They don't usually do musicals, but a production starring someone like Staunton seems more in line with their audience base and they types of productions they typically produce.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

No. It wouldn't increase the prestige of Lincoln Center Theater to do this production.

Well I think Gypsy deserves a production where the director understands that you don't need to press so hard on the gas to make the show work.

I have extremely selfish reasons for not wanting this on broadway at the moment. I want Middler's Hello Dolly to be the talk of the town in terms of classic shows with a strong female centric role. Also, I didn't like Staunton's angry performance. Also, it might derail Barbra's movie which I have been waiting for as long as Babs herself.

they feel "they deserve" a commercial production?? What does that even mean?

I think this Gypsy would need a non-profit company and/or subscriber based house to bring it here. I saw Imelda in this on the West End when I last went to London and she was absolutely incredible. But, Broadway had a very popular Gypsy not too long ago with Patti, and Staunton is not a huge name in the states. She carries a lot of weight and ticket selling power on British stages, but her name wont do that here. I fear a standard commercial Broadway would not be financially successful. It "deserves" a subscription house.

Roundabout to bring in Stauntons GYPSY?

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

LOL.

Yep, that's Roundabout. All about the innovative art. Never producing shows that commercial producers do.

"Well I think Gypsy deserves a production where the director understands that you don't need to press so hard on the gas to make the show work."

I have always wondered what a director like Bartlett Sher would do with the material. I want to a see very very overblown production of Gypsy and see if that'll work again in this time and age of stripped down minimalistic shows. But I agree with you completely that the show needed nuance and complexity, which the 2015 London production simply did not have. It was so... angry throughout. There was no love of any sort. June's character really felt like a prop, I did not care for it even a little bit.

Shame. Though part of me is more than okay with it falling through since the 2008 production was perfection. Sublime from beginning to the end (especially that devastating, bleak end—I much prefer that one than the West End production's). And this is coming from someone who very much enjoyed and appreciated Imelda's take on the role.

And I'm LOL'ing at the notion that Roundabout has no commercial intentions...

No clue what Jeffrey was talking about. This is exactly the kind of thing Roundabout would bring over. Here's hoping the talks fell through indeed. We can't waste a GYPSY revival on this production. And whoever said that this would in any way overshadow Midler's Dolly, watch Staunton play Rose like she's had a few bumps from the second she steps on stage...Midler has nothing to worry about. I love GYPSY and would love to see a revival with a great American actress who understands the musical theater tradition from which this show emerged: Donna Murphy, Jane Krakowski, Tonya Pinkins, Audra McDonald.

My impossible dream fantasy would be for Streisand to bring Gypsy to the stage and then have a Midler v Streisand Tony race, although in a million years that'd never happen, but could you imagine?

I abosolutely adored this production. It completely erased memories from the 2008 revival (Full disclosure, besides Benanti, it didn't do it for me). Hope it shows up at BAM

I like to imagine a world in which successful women are not constantly pitched against each other like gladiators but that will never happen in a million years either.

I could have easily said this about two male stars in different productions but these just happen to be two women who are relevant to the topic at hand.
