Thank you 'best' for replying to my post and suppose I just accept that Edna is to be played by a man[as written] like an English panto Dame and that each man who plays the part brings whatever manly characteristic he has to reveal a 'different' Edna.

PS---Who played the Mother in Another Gay Movie--now SHE is the Mother of all Ednas !!

OK I love that idea. There are so many good people that could play Edna. Again, I'm just praying they don't re-cast John Travolta. Nobody needed to see him in Hairspray.

Ryann Redmond as Tracy. She played Bridget in Bring It On on Broadway. She can sing and dance.

There really is no point in doing this without Harvey.

I'll never understand why everyone is suggesting bringing back people from the movie. How boring would that be? They already did it, let's get a new cast. That being said, I won't be watching if Darren Criss is in anyway involved. Annaleigh Ashford as Amber? I'd say with Kristin Chenoweth as Velma but I don't know if the height difference would be weird.

The commercial breaks are how NBC is able to do these regularly, so I doubt they'll be doing less of them. While having so many breaks obviously isn't ideal, a little Broadway is better than none!

If you compare all three broadcasts, the most limited interruption was for PETER PAN. Why is that? Because Walmart was the lead sponsor. They enabled nbc to do limited commercial interruption, although every interruption included poor Tinkerbell with Melissa Joan Hart and her children. So random.

Actually. They were the lead sponsor for SOUND OF MUSIC, too. There were more commercials this year for THE WIZ, though, because they had no lead sponsor enabling nbc to feature limited commercial interruption. Oh well.

Jshan05 said: "While I'm not the biggest fan, I think Ariana Grande could be a huge appeal as Penny...as long as she tones down her riffs/runs. She at least has some acting experience from starring in JRB's 13. "

I'm also not her biggest fan, but I think Ariana is a great idea for Penny. I don't even think she needs to tone down her runs, I prefer when Penny gets all sassy with the vocals (Diana DeGarmo is one of my favorite Pennys).

Also Harvey tweeted about being cast as Edna for this production about a few hours ago, it seems he would do it if they asked (and they should).

Ariana would be a brilliant Penny. Also a great draw, viewer wise. Could you imagine her singing 'Without Love'? Yes yes yes.

Very happy with this choice, how about Angela Bassett or Stephanie Mills for Mabel? :)

Jane Seymour as Velma?

I am glad we are getting this because I feel they butchered the show with the film version. Can't wait to hear Big Doll house and Mama I'm a big girl now.

Christine Ebersole as Velma Von Tussle? She recorded a demo for the movie, and I think she'd be great, even though she is a 9/11 Truth-er.

The producers have said NEVER to the subject of a live audience.  http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/wiz-producers-how-oscars-turned-845893

Gwyneth Paltrow as Velma (not even a big fan of hers, but can see her in the part)

I guess I am a rare naysayer.  The movie was only made 7 - 8 years ago, for crying out loud.  Couldn't they wait another 10 years.  Why can't they be a little more risky. I am not referring to edgy, more to something that people may not be familiar with, but would meet the bill.  Give it some big stars to compensate for the less immediately familiar.  How about Pajama Game, for example; or Boy From Oz (if...); or a revised Bells Are Ringing, with some young hotties who can do comedy.  Etc.

All I want for this is Harvey and a live studio audience.

"With all due respect, John Waters wrote Edna Turnblad as a woman and Divine chose to play her that way.  It was never played as a "man in drag" which Divine never was - every female role he ever played was played as a real woman.  This idea was honored in the Broadway adaptation and every actor who has played Edna played her as a woman.  Never as a drag act."

I disagree, I think Harvey played it like a man in a frock and it was hilarious. Whereas John Travolta played it as a woman, and it was flat, with all the comedy missing. It is far funnier seeing a man, not attempting to be a convincing woman.

They'll never do this, but they really need a real drag queen playing Edna. Having some Hollywood actor (like John Travolta) dress in drag and act like a woman is pointless and defeats the purpose. I'm not even sure Hairspray works if divorced from John Waters (though I've never seen the stage musical so I'm certainly willing to be proven wrong).

It worked like a charm with Harvey Fierstein playing a woman in the stage musical.  It would be lovely to have that performance captured in a TV version.
