That's an awesome video - what a surprise for Rob Marshall and the audience! Those are three incredible and talented women, and it's actually quite endearing to see that they've formed a friendship during their time working on Into the Wood.

207 pages on this thread? Amazing! Especially since those who profess to not liking the film keep coming back to chime in and keep it going.

That video was awesome. I love how Meryl can take her work very seriously but never takes herself very seriously. Such a healthy balance. She has great sense of humor.

Great video, thanks so much for sharing!! It sounds like the audience got a real kick out of it too.

After this weekend, Into the Woods will have passed Hairspray in its slot as the #6 highest grossing musical film of all time (in non-adjusted dollars).

It's not likely that it will pass #5, Enchanted, with $127.8 million domestic gross.

The international gross hasn't really taken off for this film, although perhaps it's too soon to call. Still it definitely didn't open big.

So far the international adds only $26 million to the total.

By contrast (and VERY unusual too), the international gross of Mamma Mia far surpassed the domestic with $465.7 million total. Not the norm.

Chicago's international total was $136 million.

Les Mis was $293 million for international (also unusually high, but still nothing like Mamma Mia).

Enchanted - $212 million international.

Hairspray - $83 million.

So while Into the Woods will outgross Hairspray domestically after this weekend, it still has a very long way to go before it outgrosses Hairspray's international.

EDIT: My opinion is that Disney waited too long to open the film in international markets. I can understand a 1-2 week delay, but not 3-5 weeks. The film is already cooling at the box office in the US after a stellar marketing campaign to promote it. They aren't really piggybacking at all on the American campaign at this point. It's "old news" here. I think that's a mistake.

By "here", you mean where?

I don't see why you'd be surprised at mamma mia (and abba) and les miserables international grosses. They are massively popular brands around the world, Into The Woods not really.

January was absolutely the best time to open here in the UK, les mis did the same thing. Into The Woods didn't have much competition unlike it would have at Christmas time and Christmas day itself is not a big day to open movies here

"By "here", you mean where?"

Do you really need me to answer that? It's old news now in the United States. The marketing campaign has dialed down, so have the personal appearances and interviews and press coverage, and the box office has dropped to minor increases each week.

That's what I mean.

Those are three incredible and talented women, and it's actually quite endearing to see that they've formed a friendship during their time working on Into the Wood.

All 3 ladies have been friends for years, they didn't just meet on the set of INTO THE WOODS.

Christine Baranski co-starred with Streep in the 2008 film adaptation of MAMMA MIA! and Streep and Ullman have been very close friends for about 30 years since they worked together on the 1985 film PLENTY. Ullman always provides a funny speech or presentation whenever Streep wins or is giving an award. She's been doing so for decades.

Here is Tracey Ullman speaking about Meryl Streep at Streep's AFI Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 (11 years ago):

growl---I thought it would have lost more steam by now, but I'm happy to see that while it's increases are slowing, it looks like it will pass "Enchanted" to claim the #5 spot for highest grossing musicals.

Perhaps even this weekend, or shortly after. Very cool!

I love the listed bonus features, too. Looking forward to watching them!

We've talked about this film to death, but I thought I'd quickly say that I've seen it three times now and I love it. I love the performances, particularly Emily Blunt, Meryl Streep and James Corden. The orchestra is amazing! I can't stop listening to the brass when Meryl Streep makes her entrance. It looks beautiful. Sometimes I missed the cuts, but only sometimes.

I've seen it with a range of different non-musical fans, and their opinions range from "I loved it", "I liked it but had some issues with the plot", "I hated it and all the songs sound the same". But whatever, I don't care. Over the last 5 years I have been thoroughly rewarded for being a Sondheim fan in terms of productions, concerts and films. This is no exception.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I've seen it six times now, and I really think James Corden is the unsung hero here. Just watch him during the scene when they buy Milky White from Jack. Lots of stuff going on there.

I can't wait for the Blu Ray. I have some speakers that need replacing and the release date of this Blu ray gives me motivation to get it done.

This truly is a film that gets even better with each viewing, because you always notice something you missed at first! Yes, it's not the same tone as the stage show--it's a little less self-aware I guess. I will say I think this plays on "Wishes have consequences" and "parent-child relationships", really well, while the stage play played on "community and morality" more. Anyone else feel this way? I appreciated that in the film Jack's Mother's death was handled differently. Though one might argue that it was not possible she could die (though I think she hit her head on a large root or something..giving the same skull impact in the stage show), I did like her final scene more. The "as I wait at death's door save jack" thing always made me laugh, and I always felt I should not have laughed then.

I just can't wait to hear "She'll Be Back" and see it performed!

Did anyone watch last night's Oscars? Anna Kendrick appeared in the opening number in her Cinderella costume and sang with Neil Patrick Harris.

"Into the Woods" is now a mere $500,000 away from the #5 slot, upsetting Enchanted, for highest-grossing musical. With the home video releases out next week, I didn't realize this was still playing in theatres in the U.S.

(The counts are for domestic only.)

I don't know that it will make it, but it's very close. Still #6 is nothing to sneeze at.

Alright well someone has posted the full footage of She'll Be Back on youtube and now seeing it instead of hearing it I definitely think it should have stayed in the film. Especially because it makes the Act Two portion longer so the film feels less like Act Two is "Act Three" if that makes sense. It has such a grounded realism in the way it's shot and Meryl Streep's incredible performance as an in denial mother. It really makes Rapunzel living feel more of a thought out change and the last moment where you see the witch alone you could see someone like this being driven to her suicide in Last Midnight. I feel like had the audience experienced this song they could be more accepting of the adultery and deaths that follow. The transition tonally feels more organic and fleshes out the Act Two witch

I agree I love the song. But I almost feel there should be a bigger dramatic belty moment in the song. I mean there's the "When she knows who to trust". There needs to be more of definite climax.
