Trying to give the benefit of the doubt, what are the typical parameters for set design during an out of town tryout? Would they have been allowed to, say, cut through the stage, make trap doors, have sufficient fly space, etc.? Can someone more familiar with this enlighten me? Maybe they're limited by the Buell if the current St. James was insufficient space?

I'm pretty sure what we are seeing from Denver is going to be the extent of the physical production. One of the points of an out of town tryout is to iron out all the technical aspects, so they would not leave out set pieces. I am not bothered by the lack of a physical palace set after seeing the photos and the video clip.

^^^ Exactly, which I why I'm nervous, because sadly I am bothered, it just looks lazy an underwhelming when it shouldn't be. I've found that unless something totally drastic isn't working, usually the Broadway run usually doesn't change all that much from the pre Broadway run. Anastasia made hardly any changes with the exception of the blue dress, (I think?) and Little Mermaid had none (maybe?), I think Aladdin and Wicked are the one I can think off offhand that went though the most changes. The pre Broadway tryout is almost a thing of the past these days really, Wicked and previous were the days a lot, if not most, shows did this. I could be wrong though. 

EDIT-Someone is absolutely going through these threads, because now my entire comment of retrying that link is gone. So I give up. And we all might as well, because they will be taken down. Yet pictures, are still up? I give up...

You know I really thought the castle woukd

come up from the stage too. I mean in the movie she kinda brings up the castle from the ground, so I reslly

thoufjt that'd happen in the show. Let it go was kinda underwhelming from that video. Nothing really happens she just stands there waving her arms. I thought they'd do some really cool effects during let it go especially in the climax of the song.

They could have all the swirling effects choreographed on the projections: 



Then having her stomp on the ground producing a an huge expanding effect on the projections to engulf the entire proscenium: 



And have her holding on to the staircase as it swirls up from stage then as its rising she can walk up and down on it during the song for dramatic effect: 



And as the staircase is about to finish being fully extended, have the balcony set piece float down simultaneously from above and connect to the end of the extended staircase so she can walk onto it and finish the song on the balcony as in the film:



Her singing the last lyric and whipping around to a black out and the audience ROARS for 4 minutes as Act 1 ends.

I'm also not bothered by the lack of a physical set. With a beast of a song like "Let It Go," the quality of the vocals should be first and foremost, and, in this case, they sound just about perfect. In the end, that's what's most important to me. I'd much rather have her stand in one spot and deliver a flawless vocal performance than walk around the stage and up and down a staircase, which could conceivably detract from it.

That is the funniest post I've ever read.

Why not just stay at home and watch the film. You should be a designer with all of your amazing ideas. 

Whats on stage in Denver IS the Broadway show. They can do everything they will do on Broadway in Denver.. and are doing so.

Holy sh*t, some of you are defending what looks like the lowest common denominator of theatre.  Save some money and go watch a cruise ship show, it will look about the same and meals are included.  As the kids say, "yikes."

The stagehouse of the Buell is enormous, and they would definitely be allowed to cut holes for traps, etc (which is how the Let It Go quick hange happens).

Does anyone know why Betsy really didn't continue with Frozen? I also wonder if Alex Timbers maybe was gonna make the "lion king" spectacle happen. It sounds like what Michael has is make a theme park show.

"It's pretty obvious.. no new director would want to inherit someone else's casting.. and it's highly unlikely that M Grandage would have cast her himself.

This is Disneys biggest animated movie property and clearly their answer to wicked yet they seem to have gone for basics on the biggest moment. Pretty much everyone i speak to about this show has expectations on the staging being amazing, its disney after all. Also now the song is the act 1 closer theres even more of an expectation and this just looks a bit flat (costume change is cool though). The theme park version is staged better than this, this just looks a bit rushed 

There is no such thing as a guarantee and this could easily go the way of the little mermaid if they mess this up and word of mouth spreads

Since the film came out four years ago, I've maintained that when on stage, "Let It Go" ought to rival "Defying Gravity" as one of the greatest Act I finales of all time. I truly hope they don't let me down!

For those questioning Denver's set limitations, I'll just elaborate that the Buell stage/wingspace is quite large.  And those of us who saw Tyspin's work for The Little Mermaid in Denver and hoped for more come Broadway were disappointed.  In fact, the reports so far seem very reminiscent of Mermaid's trajectory.  If this is what we have after all of the labs and workshops, Disney/Grandage seem to have settled on the bulk of the story and presentation, and large, sweeping changes are unlikely.

I remember reading somewhere that the Denver set is the same set they are moving to Broadway so I don't think they are planning any major changes.

I see this having a similar run to "Mary Poppins." It lacks the emotional resonance and magic of "The Lion King" or "Beauty and the Beast" to keep audiences coming once the initial "OMG Frozen" phase passes.

I think I'm right in thinking this new creative team had very little time to put their show together? Big musicals take years to develop so it seems to me a bit of a miracle they have a show on stage at all considering the major change they had with director and design team etc. Maybe it was too rushed. 

The fact is they will learn a lot from Denver and anything needing major work will get some before NYC. They have a good few months inbtween. I also think it's unfair to judge a show on badly filmed footage- which people shouldn't be doing anyway!

I still can't believe they really didn't make the castle assemble magicaly from the stage. One of the biggest selling points was a massive set design that needed so much space. It's still so surreal they ended up with just some flat panels and a glitter curtain.

 

everytime I saw the also disappointing dca production I thought, well can't wait for Broadway where they'll definitely do it right. And then we end up with this?

 

And why does this production cost 25 mil?! God, I really miss Bob Crowley. Think about an ice castle the size of the banks' house in Mary Poppins (the Broadway version obviously)
