Surprised no one has commented on how much of the lighting is far too dark in the movie lol. Half of fantasia's face was obscured during I'm here. Seemed like a real easy fix but I've noticed in general no one really is lighting movies well anymore.

Could it have been an issue with your specific theater? I had no problem with the lighting, and the picture can be greatly affected by a dim projector bulb or a low brightness setting.

I think this was a problem with your theater’s projection (sadly, too common these days). I thought the cinematography was pretty gorgeous, and the actors lit very well. I really liked this adaptation. Though I can’t say that I’m very close to the material, I’ve read the book, seen the Spielberg movie and also the Broadway revival. I liked how this was unapologetically a movie musical, existing in that heightened reality that acknowledges the real world but also creates its own. All the performances was great. Fantasia, I found particularly good. A really open-hearted and committed performance. I hope she’s remembered come Oscar time.

Saw it at a Landmark Theater and there was absolutely no problem with the lighting and the sound was also great.

As I commented in #609 I thought the lighting was too dark. Way too many scenes that were back-lit and hard to see performer faces.

Unless it's a big blockbuster hit, movies don't last long in theaters anymore. I remember seeing Black Panther 2 in it's 3rd week and the theater was empty. It was only around another week in theaters.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

The Color Purple is still playing in movie theaters. It's pretty common for films to come out digitally and continue to play in theaters at the same time. Some people prefer just to go see it at the movie theater since they are charging almost 20 dollars to rent it digitally.

That's purely anecdotal. Black Panther 2 made almost $900M in theatres with $450M in the US. And it played in US theatres with at least 1000 screens until February... Updated On: 1/16/24 at 12:37 PM

I saw the original film version a zillion times.  I'm in Atlanta so saw the original musical version while in development  at Alliance theatre.  I was enthralled by it so I went back a few times.  But the absolute best version was the revival.  I saw it on Broadway with Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo and was absolutely blown away.  That was such a rush. Stellar!

So, when I learned there would be a musical version, I was assuming (hoping) it would be modeled after that revival.

I was going to see the movie here in Atlanta but never got around to it.  So last night I  just purchased it on Apple, am glad to support the cause. I am sorry that they are not having more success with this.  It's already out of the top ten boxoffice charts, and I decided to just "buy" it since it will be leaving movie theaters soon.....

Anyway, I lasted about 15 minutes.  I may have to do this in small doses. I was surprised at the choreography/dance numbers.  It doesn't seem like a story that would be suited for lots of dance and spectacle  The big joyful dance number in the intro just felt weird.

I am thinking this won't be my cup of tea.  I love me some Danielle though and am sure she shines.  Does it get better as it progresses?

I think the worst mistake they made with the movie is how they sanitized and cheapened Celie's inner growth.I'll never understand why anyone would think it would be a good idea to axe most og her relationship with Shug, especially relegating What About Love to Celie's dream sequence with equally flummoxing choreography except to attempt to appeal to a homophobic crowd. And the result isn't pretty, because doing so also diminishes Celie's jourmey of self-discovery and oversimplifies Celie's complex and nuanced human expereince to the cookiecutter commercial girl power narrative. By dropping Shug's "you sho is ugly" and Too Beautiful for Words altogether, not only is the interaction between Celie and Shug made much more superficial, "I'm beautiful" from I'm Here is also made much, much less impactful than the stage version. Hell, the way they contextualize the song in the movie is sacriligeous at best. The new songs, at the cost of much better numbers already there, add nothing or very little to the story, and Halle Bailey's solo actually suits the Little Mermaid better than the Awkwafina abomination. The movie as a whole is just disappointing especially if you are familiar with the original and the stage version, and it just baffles me that the creatives did not question the obviously inferior choices they have made along the way.

I had planned on seeing it at a Regal Theatre near me today, but it seems as though Regal pulled it from its NY theaters a few days earlier than expected. Its box office pull died very quickly.

I agree with everything you are saying. Also I felt they buried the lyrics in "What About Love" under the orchestra. I could barely hear or understand the lyrics in that song at all.

Fantasia's performance as Celie was so beautiful to me, and really touched me. I loved how she acted. It was so  moving. I wish she had been nominated for the Oscar.

I also loved her performance! I feel like nobody was talking about how good her acting is in this. I watched this with my partner (who doesn't love musicals), and he was like "why the hell is everyone freaking out about Margot Robbie when Fantasia gave a performance like THAT". In a less competitive year she might've won.

I completely agree! Margot was good but Fantasia was so touching! If only she could have been nominated in a less competitive year. C'mon, Oscars, just open an extra slot for her!

As well done as the majority of this movie was, I can't help but feel that the filmmakers totally undercut Fantasia by cutting both the context and intro to "I'm Here." Celie's big 11 o'clock number felt like it had little build up and started a little out of nowhere. Instead of "oh boy here it comes!" I remember feeling like "Oh, here it is?" and being caught a bit by surprise. Not to mention the entire number was filmed in the dark.

By contrast, I was very moved by the closing number.

Thank you for the news flash.....

I never implied that she was. I was simply saying that it is funny that everyone is freaking out about Margot Robbie not getting a nomination for her perfectly fine performance in Barbie, yet nobody is talking about Fantasia getting overlooked for her genuinely great performance.

I'll be sure to cover all my bases and clarify next time.

She was. She received a nomination for Best Picture as a producer.

She would have been nominated (Taraji as well) had the production actually given her something to do in the movie instead of Celie being a set piece getting shuffled around from place to place. That's who let her down, not the Academy.

@Teddy1996 - you were very enthusiastic about the movie in the months leading up to its release but it has been radio silence since.  I hope it brought you moments of joy despite its many shortcomings.
