New York in the 1880s - a shy and plain young girl, Catherine Sloper, who falls desperately in love with a delightful young fortune hunter. Her father, a successful doctor (played by Ron Dauphinee) sees through the guise and forbids the marriage. Catherine retires into a little world of her own. When the fortune hunter shows up at the doorstep again, will she be fooled for a second time?
