The Western Front, Christmas, 1914. Out of the violence comes a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing Stille Nacht. Thus begins an extraordinary night of camaraderie, music, peace. Based on a remarkable true story, featuring the highly acclaimed vocal ensemble Cantus. The work is created from letters, war journals, and the poetry and songs of World War I that tell the remarkable story of the Christmas Truce of World War I, where enemy soldiers put down their weapons, stepped into No Man’s Land and celebrated Christmas together, engaging in the transformative gift of music, friendship and peace. At the Pantages Theater.

Takach, on the Octagon Stage December 7 - 29, 2019. Directed by Melissa Rain Anderson, this dramatic retelling weaves together firsthand accounts of World War I soldiers with patriotic tunes, trench songs, and Christmas carols.

From its founding in a high school auditorium in Anniston in 1972 to its designation as the State Theatre of Alabama in 1977 to the stunning $21.5 million performing arts complex in Montgomery (built in 1985), ASF has been a leader in the performing arts throughout the state, region, and country.
