FRANKENSTEIN Comes to La Monnaie
by BWW News Desk - February 08, 2019
The disappointment was palpable when midway through the 2015-16 season it became clear that the world premiere of Frankenstein would not go ahead as planned because the set and the special effects were too exacting technically for the temporary infrastructure at Tour & Taxis. Partly because of the many film adaptations, Mary Shelley's modern myth about an idealistic, but arrogant scientist and his 'Creature' still clearly fires the collective imagination, and the expectations of Mark Grey's opera of the same name were running high. However, three seasons later La Monnaie is now more than ready to bring this production to life. All eyes are on the Polish-Lebanese conductor Bassem Akiki and the Spanish director lex Oll .
Museum Of Fine Arts Brings Van Eyck To Ghent
by BWW News Desk - February 05, 2019
Worldwide, only approximately twenty works by Van Eyck have been preserved. Quite exceptionally, at least half of these will travel to Ghent in 2020 for the exhibition 'Van Eyck. An optical revolution' at the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK). In what promises to be an unmissable, tour de force of an exhibition, the world of Van Eyck and his revolutionary gaze will be brought to life like never before. The museum aims to attract 250.000 visitors to the event, and is today giving a first peek into some of the coming highlights.

BWW Review: FUNERAILLES D'HIVER at Rideau De Bruxelles
by Alexander Diaconu - January 12, 2019
"Funerailles d'Hiver" is a voyage into another world. A world where one can accept the existence of a soul gathering entity, a world in which a strong wind can take you from a beach to the highest tops of the Himalayas, a world in which people can: « defy space and time, remaining totally believable. »

BOZAR Presents Keith Haring Retrospective Exhibit
by BWW News Desk - November 12, 2018
Keith Haring (1958-1990) was a unique presence in 1980s New York, playing a key role in his generation's counterculture and creating an immediately recognisable style. Best known for his iconic motifs, such as barking dogs, crawling babies and flying saucers, Haring's work was politically charged and motivated by activism. As an openly gay man, Haring's work as an AIDS activist and educator remains his most essential legacy. Elsewhere, he responded to equally critical and relevant issues, contributing to nuclear disarmament campaigns, creating a famed Crack is Wack mural, and designing anti-apartheid posters.

Z MRTVEHO DOMU Comes to La Monnaie
by BWW News Desk - October 11, 2018
After Kat'a Kabanova (2010), Jen?fa (2014) and recently Foxie! The Cunning Little Vixen, there is still more Leoš Jana?ek to come at La Monnaie. In November 2018 the opera house is presenting Z mrtveho domu (From the House of the Dead), the Czech composer's last and perhaps most powerful opera. It is based on Dostoyevsky's semi-autobiographical novel Memoirs from the House of the Dead (1862), an account of the Russian writer's own experiences as a political prisoner in a Siberian gulag. It is a mosaic of loosely-knit episodes about the inhumane conditions in a labour camp, punctuated with the stories and life histories of his fellow prisoners.

Both educational and intimate, this show confirms the author's close bond with the virtuoso Nicolas Stavy, with whom he had already created "The Bizet Mystery" at the Paris Opera.
United Music Of Brussels Announces Programme
by BWW News Desk - September 08, 2018
On 8 September, La Monnaie/De Munt, the Belgian National Orchestra and BOZAR will join forces for the third iteration of United Music of Brussels. This year's theme is wonderment as a trigger for curiosity and creativity: the wonderment people will experience as they discover both new locations and enjoy unique musical experiences that challenge the boundaries of classical music. From 2 p.m. until 7 p.m., the public and passers-by can walk from Place de la Monnaie to the Centre for Fine Arts, with multiple different and unexpected stops along the way, in fifteen iconic locations in the city centre. These mini-concerts will combine classical music and dynamic DJ sets, or jazz beats and dance. They will turn a great opera into a light-hearted musical, and a historic concert hall into a film set. We like to present to you the complete festive program where performers and visitors can share their sense of wonderment, during this congenial musical end to the summer, which also kicks off another exciting musical season!
