Single Carrot Theatre Presents THE OTHER SHORE, 12/8-1/16
by Nicole Rosky - November 30, 2010
Audiences have been enraptured by Gao's work for decades, both in his native China and abroad. He's known as a pioneer of absurdist drama in China, held in esteem with the likes of Beckett and Ionesco. Despite respect and reverence from the artistic community, the taboo nature of his pieces and the departure from traditional theatre proved too controversial for a country in the throws of its own tumult. Much of Gao's work has been deeply criticized and was eventually banned by the Chinese government.

A Psychopathic Quest for Power, Well Rendered But Less Than Truly Shakespearean
by Jack L. B. Gohn - November 28, 2010
Director Michael Carleton has envisioned Richard as the prototype of the amoral modern politician who will stop at nothing to achieve power. While professing the purest and most altruistic of motives, he holds no allegiance but to himself; he is the master of media and manipulator of appearances. To drive the point home, Carleton has Richard's famous opening monologue delivered in part as if it were a victory speech after a political campaign, shows some of the events being broadcast on CNN, and invests much of the proceedings with a Georgetown-y air. And by golly, he's right. The effect is not much different from that of Fair Game, the movie about l'affaire Valerie Plame now playing in the local bijou.
Irrational Streak
by Daniel Collins - November 28, 2010
Absurdly, sublimely ridiculous playwright Charles Ludlam's salute to acting, the relationship between fathers and sons--especially when the father and son are both actors with an affinity for 'Hamlet'--is the stuff and nonsense of 'Stage Blood' now at the Spotlighters Theater in downtown Baltimore.
