The Strand Theater Company Presents THAT PRETTY PRETTY, 2/2-18
by BWW News Desk - February 02, 2012
The Strand Theater Company marks the midpoint of its fourth season with Sheila Callaghan's antic revenge story, That Pretty Pretty; or, The Rape Play. Blending fantasy, feminism, and satire with gonzo bouts of sex and violence, this dark, dark, dark comedy will shake audiences out of their theatrical doldrums and leave them talking well into the night, debating how the media portrays "dangerous women."
READER FEEDBACK: ICEMAN COMETH at Fells Point Corner
by Daniel Collins - February 01, 2012
A Mr. Mark Squirek -- a non-facebook subscriber but an individual with an evidently keen interest in theater -- sent me this response to a recently posted review of Eugene O'Neill's THE ICEMAN COMETH, now at the Fells Point Corner Theater. To post responses to BWW reviews requires facebook membership (it's a way to eliminate anonymous, hateful postings), but not everyone has joined the millions taking the facebook plunge. I was impressed enough with the detail and depth of this letter to include it as a READER FEEDBACK column. I will say that I am a member of the ICEMAN cast, so I believe it only right to note that here. In any event, here is Mr. Squirek's comments.
COASTAL DISTURBANCES Opens at Fells Point Corner Theatre, 2/17
by Kelsey Denette - January 31, 2012
Garnering a Tony Award Nomination for Best Play when it premiered in 1987, Coastal Disturbances follows a motley ensemble of vacationers on a private Massachusetts beach -- guided by the charged summer romance between a lifeguard and a young photographer. A slice of Chekhov with a healthy dash of Ionesco's absurdism, Howe's beloved tone shines in this sensuous comedy.

BWW Reviews: Just the Songs (and Dance), Ma'am: SMOKEY JOE'S CAFE at Toby's
by Jack L. B. Gohn - January 31, 2012
The songbook of Jerry Leiber (1933-2011) and Mike Stoller (1933- ) is a natural for jukebox musical treatment, because it encompasses such variety that it requires little by way of setting to stay interesting. You don't need a plot, you don't need performers to talk or act, all you need is a band, some choreography and costumes, and some great singer/dancers, and you're there.

BWW Reviews: The ICEMAN Never Quite Makes It
by Giordana Segneri - January 30, 2012
Eugene O'Neill lived a strange and somewhat sad life during the first half of the 20th century, and despite the playwright being exceptionally lauded for his written works (he was the first American ever to win the Nobel Prize in Literature), O'Neill's The Iceman Cometh, running at the Fells Point Corner Theatre, is no less strange and sad than its author's reality.

Shall We Dance and Think About Privilege and Race? THE KING AND I at Toby's
by Jack L. B. Gohn - January 24, 2012
Rodgers and Hammerstein designed the ending to reduce you to tears, and they knew what they were doing. Resist, even at this excellent revival, and think about the conundrums of race, class and gender that that lie just beneath the surface.

BWW Reviews: Whether to Re-Up on Marriage - FIFTY WORDS at Everyman
by Jack L. B. Gohn - January 23, 2012
As playwright Michael Weller intelligently conveys, except in the most empty marriages, no matter what the parties may have done to each other, there are still ties of love holding them together. In living through these crises, then, both forces, the centripetal and the centrifugal, must have a part. To the observer, it might seem laughably incoherent, but actually it is just the way things are at such moments.
