Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders and the producing team of the Broadway smash hit THE COLOR PURPLE, The Musical about Love, are proud to announce that Austin will host the first North American Touring production of THE COLOR PURPLE for eight performances, January 12-17.

Horton Foote Prize to be Inaugurated Fall 2010

The Horton Foote Prize, a new award named after the legendary writer, which will be presented to an American playwright who has written an original work of exceptional quality, will be inaugurated this coming Fall (2010). The award, which will carry a cash prize of $30,000 and which will be awarded on a bi-annual basis, will be funded by the Austin, Texas-based Greg and Mari Marchbanks Family Foundation. Mari Marchbanks is the Founder of The Horton Foote Prize and will serve as its Executive Director. Shortly before his death last March at the age of 92, Mr. Foote gave his blessing to this eponymous award.

The man behind such cult classics as 'Pink Flamingos', 'Desperate Living' and 'Hairspray' may have been absent from the big screen in the recent past, but he continues to inject his quirky passion into a myriad projects, including penning a selection of books (his newest, 'Role Models,' is due in 2010), photography , fine art and even staged and performed a one-man autobiographical show called 'This Filthy World', and hosted the Court TV series 'Til Death Do Us Part', amongst other ventures. Now, as reported by Austin 360, he's bringing his holiday touring show, a one-man monologue with his own unique slant on Christmas, to Austin's Paramount Theatre tonight, December 12.

The Horton Foote Festival will honor critically acclaimed playwright Craig Wright as the 2009 recipient of the Horton Foote Excellence in American Playwriting Award, according to notes on the Horton Foote Festival website. Amongst the events taking place during the festival weekend will be readings of Wright's plays ‘Grace' and ‘The Pavilion', academic panel discussions of his work, and a tribute to Horton Foote.

Texas Performing Arts' flagship venue Bass Concert Hall has moved from number 13 (mid-year ranking) to 7 on the top 100 Worldwide Theatre Venues with 215,237 tickets sold for events between January 1 and September 30, 2009, according to Pollstar, the trade journal for touring artists, booking agents and performance venues.
