Spotlight: MARY JANE at Seattle Rep

“Love Is a Verb”: Tony-Nominated Mary Jane at Seattle Rep

By: Mar. 06, 2026

This spring, a New York Times Critic’s Pick and Tony Award–nominated play by Amy Herzog comes to Seattle RepMary Jane is a deeply human drama, hailed as “the most profound…of Herzog’s fine plays,” and celebrated for its “upbeat charm… beautifully detailed… brutally honest” storytelling (The New York Times).

Originally produced on Broadway starring Rachel McAdams in the title role, Mary Jane follows a devoted single mother caring for her young son with cerebral palsy and chronic illness, as she builds unexpected community while navigating the American healthcare system. The play has been celebrated for how it “intimately explores the complexities of caregiving, friendship, the fragility of life, and the need for a network to survive” (New York Theatre Guide), balancing humor, tenderness, and resilience with remarkable grace.

Poignantly funny and deeply cathartic, Mary Jane is a love letter to caregivers and support systems of all kinds—rooted in the play’s central idea that “love is a verb… care is not just something we feel, but something we do,” as described by Director Allison Narver.

Mary Jane begins March 19 on the Leo K. stage—secure your seats today.
