Art Seen Films Presents Lithuanian Ballet Desdemona at Symphony Space – One Day Only, June 28

New York audiences will have a rare opportunity to experience a cinematic presentation of Desdemona, a visually arresting contemporary dance work inspired by Shakespeare’s Othello, screening Saturday, June 28 at 3:00 PM at Symphony Space, presented by Art Seen Films.

Choreographed by internationally acclaimed Lithuanian artist An?eika Cholina, Desdemona offers a feminist reimagining of Shakespeare’s tragedy, told entirely through the language of dance. With Desdemona at the emotional center of the story, Cholina transforms Othello into a poignant meditation on innocence, betrayal, and love. The result is a haunting and powerfully expressive work that blends contemporary movement with classical music and bold theatricality.

Cholina is known to many in the world theatre theatre community for her long-standing collaboration with director Rimas Tuminas at Moscow’s prestigious Vakhtangov Theatre, where she contributed to such acclaimed productions as Eugene Onegin and War and Peace. Her unique choreographic style, blending narrative dance and emotional truth, was also seen in her own full-length dance adaptation of Anna Karenina, which Art Seen Films previously brought to U.S. cinemas.

“This is an artist whose work resonates deeply across borders,” said Ed Aronoff, President of Art Seen Films. “Cholina’s Desdemona is both fiercely modern and steeped in classical tradition. It’s a story audiences think they know, told in a way they’ve never seen before.”

Art Seen Films is dedicated to bringing international stage works to American movie theaters, with a focus on productions that might otherwise go unseen outside their home countries. The June 28 screening is part of the company’s mission to highlight boundary-breaking artists from across Europe and beyond.
