Edward Gero & Patrick Andrews Lead RED at Goodman Theatre, 9/17-10/23

Goodman Theatre Artistic Director Robert Falls announces his cast for Red, John Logan's two-person Tony Award-winning Broadway sensation that launches the Goodman's 2011/2012 season (September 17 - October 23, 2011).

Washington, D.C.-based actor Edward Gero assumes the role of abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko and Chicagoan Patrick Andrews portrays Ken, Rothko's young new assistant. "I'm thrilled to welcome back Ed Gero to the Goodman for John Logan's brilliant work, Red. In my recent production of King Lear, Ed was a brilliant Gloucester, and is counted among Washington, D.C.'s most prolific theater artists," said Artistic Director Robert Falls. "I'm excited to work for the first time with Patrick Andrews, a rising star who has distinguished himself in major roles throughout Chicago following his memorable turn in The Actor-a highlight of our 2008 Horton Foote Festival."

Full-blooded and visceral, the Tony Award-winning Red is a journey into the mind of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, for whom paintings are "pulsating" life forces and art is intended to stop the heart. Red chronicles the tormented painter's twoyear struggle to complete a lucrative set of murals for Manhattan's exclusive Four Seasons restaurant, and his fraught relationship with a seemingly naïve young assistant-who must choose between appeasing his mentor and changing the
course of art history. Set amid the swiftly-changing cultural tide of the early 1960s, Red is a startling snapshot of a brilliantartist at the height of his fame, a play hailed as "smart and scintillating" (The New Yorker) and "intense and exciting" (The New York Times).

Gero is a four-time Helen Hayes Award recipient and a 14-time Helen Hayes nominee. His regional credits include a recently completed run as Antonio Salieri in Amadeus at Round House Theatre, where he also played Richard Nixon in Nixon's Nixon in 1999 and 2008 and received a Helen Hayes Award nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor for both. Additional regional credits include the title
character in Signature Theatre's 2010 production of Sweeney Todd; David Malter in The Chosen for Theater J at Arena Stage; Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol at Ford's Theatre; Donny in American Buffalo at The Studio Theatre and Horace Vandergelder in The Matchmaker at Centerstage in Baltimore. Other favorites include John in Shining City, Ivan in The Seafarer and Tom Sargeant in Skylight (Helen Hayes Award), Uncle Vanya and Phillip Gellburg in Broken Glass. In 28
seasons with Shakespeare Theatre Company, he has played 70 roles including Hotspur in Henry IV (Helen Hayes Award), Bolingbroke in Richard II (Helen Hayes Award) and Macduff in Macbeth (Helen Hayes Award). Film and television credits include Die Hard 2, Striking Distance, and narrations for the Discovery Channel and PBS.

Patrick Andrews (Ken) last appeared at the Goodman in The Actor. His recent Chicago credits include American Buffalo at Steppenwolf Theatre Company; Do the Hustle at Writers' Theatre; Cabaret at Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook; The Homosexuals and Stupid Kids at About Face Theatre; The People's Temple and Speech & Debate at American Theater Company; The Snow Queen at Victory Gardens Theater; Into the Woods at Marriott Theatre Lincolnshire; Willy Wonka at
Chicago Shakespeare Theater; The Sparrow at The House Theatre and Dorian at Bailiwick Chicago. Other regional credits include American Buffalo at McCarter Theatre Center, Saved at Kansas City Repertory Theatre and West Side Story at Walnut Street Theatre. Additionally, Andrews performed in the national tour of Broadway's Fosse. Choreography credits include Cherrywood, directed by David Cromer at Mary-Arrchie Theatre; Queertopia at About Face Theatre; Go, Dog. Go! at
Chicago Children's Theatre and Bible B-Sides with Sinnerman Ensemble. On television, he has appeared in The Chicago Code. Andrews is an ensemble member of American Theatre Company, an artistic associate with About Face Theatre, a member of the queer-electronic-f*#% band Daan and a member of Goldmine.
