Based on the German play by Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening allows us to see through the eyes of teenagers in the late 1800s, showing us how their issues relate to teens today. The story follows the trials of many different characters. Wendla is curious about adulthood and how it will affect her relationships to those around her. Melchior is a radical who sees the world differently from his counterparts. Melchior’s discoveries lead him to connect with Wendla, elevating their relationship to the next level. Meanwhile, Melchior’s friend, Moritz, is becoming increasingly aware of his emerging sexuality. Their peers experience a new awakening as well, making new discoveries of their own. As they connect with each other, they find love in the face of tragedy.
*Spring Awakening is rated R, as it has adult language and deals with many mature themes including: sexuality, suicide, teen pregnancy, abortion, physical abuse, and sexual abuse.
