More than a hundred years since it appalled critics, thrilled audiences and was reviled by the press, Henrik Ibsen’s Ghosts remains as sensational and electric as ever. Independent Theatre is bringing this controversial masterpiece to Adelaide audiences this winter.

Ghosts follows the story of Mrs Helen Alving, a rich widow, as she prepares to open an orphanage in memory of her late husband. Her son Oswald’s return, summons ghosts of the past that she is trying desperately to forget. Slowly and mercilessly the secrets and lies of an isolated country town are stripped bare.

Ghosts is a captivating drama that explores familial secrets and tensions. While not so shocking today, it remains compelling and relevant and is a must see for lovers of classic theatre.

Since its debut in 1882, it has been performed internationally from New York City, London, Germany, Mexico City to Beijing. Richard Eyre’s 2013/2014 adaptation was widely acclaimed, winning several Oliviers. The filmed performance was screened to more than 275 UK and Irish cinemas. Independent Theatre will be performing Richard Eyre’s award-winning adaptation on stage!

This thrilling masterpiece has also graced the small screens, with the 1987 BBC television adaptation featuring an award-winning cast, including Judi Dench, Kenneth Branagh, Michael Gambon, Freddie Jones and Natasha Richardson.

The intimate Star Theatre 2 will be the perfect stage for this spellbinding, 5-person chamber piece, starring Lyn Wilson, Eddie Sims, David Roach, Chris Duncan and Sophie Livingston-Pearce.

Ghosts is the second production of Independent Theatre’s magnificent 40th anniversary season, following the smash hit of The Corn is Green. Our 2023 season features an exquisite selection of 19th and 20th century classics.

This sensational production opens on Saturday, 16 June for a strictly limited season. Tickets are available now!
