DIAMOND LIL Set for Series of Performances at Don't Tell Mama this Fall, Begin. 9/15
by BWW News Desk - Sep 8, 2013

Written in 1928 by Mae West, the stage play "Diamond Lil" has laced itself into a position of public awareness once again. Three events in August, that led to whoopee, winks, and ink in The New York Times, The Village Voice, The Brooklyn Courier, etc., lifted the petticoats of petulance from the attitudes of no less than 300 Manhattanites who have missed Mae West. Don't Tell Mama Sets 'Diamond Lil' Darlene Violette, Sidney Myer for Sundays, October 27-November 24
by BWW News Desk - Oct 8, 2013

Written in 1928 by Mae West, the stage play "Diamond Lil" has been called many things including 'critically acclaimed,' 'more sinful than Sodom,' and 'a drama of the underworld.' The seedy underbelly of the old Sixth Ward is well represented here with a cast of actors portraying prostitutes, procurers, sex traffickers, jewel thieves, gigolos, hornswogglers, and con men. BWW Reviews: MARQUEE FIVE Earns An A-Plus With Beautiful 'Broadway By the Letter' Harmonies at 54 Below
by Stephen Hanks - Oct 23, 2013

Two years ago I heard the relatively new “Marquee Five” perform a show at the Laurie Beechman Theatre called “8-Track Throwback,” which was a five part harmony homage to the music of the 1960s and '70s. They hadn't gotten even halfway through their set when I realized that in Marquee Five I'd heard my Manhattan Transfer for the new millennium. Marquee Five's style is less jazzy and more pop than the Transfer, and their sound is infused with the tones of a co-ed barbershop quintet, Broadway belting, and holiday season caroling. Marquee Five's new show last Saturday night at 54 Below did nothing to push me off their bandwagon. In Broadway By the Letter: Act One (a set of songs representing the first half of the alphabet), this fabulous five-some once again delivered delicious harmonies on a variety of song styles, standout individual performances, and intricate yet accessible vocal arrangements. BWW Reviews: With 'Unplugged,' Flying V Scores Again With a Touching Homage to the Giants of Rock n' Roll
by Andrew White - Oct 1, 2013

With 'Unplugged,' the youthful Flying V company helps us to commune with our long-lost idols, and offers us an often-amusing and touching version of their possible afterlives. Jason Schlafstein has assembled yet another multi-talented talented cast, who provide us with the music as well as the dramatic action. Consisting of two one-acts, 'All Apologies' by Hunter Styles, and 'Me and the Devil Blues' by Seamus Sullivan, the production will be a treat for anyone who loves the music-with the bonus that we get to hear selections from some of Rock's most memorable songs. In one amusing case, we get to hear a dead star cook up another tune or two. (more...)

BWW Reviews: An American Musical Theatre Treasure, Barbara Cook Mesmerizes at The McCallum
by David Green - Mar 23, 2013

It is probably not the best form for a writer to begin a composition with “There are No Words To Describe” … but that is the first thing that came to mind after spending a glorious evening in the theatre with a true American Musical Theatre treasure, Barbara Cook, last Thursday at The McCallum. In actuality, there are words. Marvelous. Magnificent. Mesmerizing. And, many more. It was one of those – “Pinch me -- I'm so lucky to be here tonight” sort of evenings and one I will not soon forget. Ms. Cook, at 85, was suffering from an infection in her vocal chords and began the show with a tongue in cheek disclaimer – “Now, don't go home and tell everybody she's losing her voice” – but even at “partial voice' it was an evening not to be missed. BWW Reviews: The One and Only Miss Barbara Cook Gives Dazzling New Concert at Valley Performing Arts Center
by Don Grigware - Jul 3, 2012

On Saturday June 30, Valley Performing Arts Center, Northridge played host to the exquisite Miss Barbara Cook, still radiant at 84, who is perhaps the greatest legendary singer to ever grace a stage. What can one say about this living legend that has not already been said to death? I can only add that being in her presence, as I sat in the vast auditorium, I felt like I had been invited into her living room and was sharing a gift that she was giving to me alone and then, of course, to everyone else lucky enough to be there. She made each and every one feel special. (more...)

Barbara Cook At Long Last Gives The Gift Of Her Music To Las Vegas
by Ellen Sterling - Aug 17, 2012

I first fell in love with Barbara Cook when I was a small child and was taken to see Plain and Fancy. What I remember to this day from that show is Barbara Cook coming onstage in a turquoise Lincoln Continental. The car had a black leather interior and she was dressed to match - turquoise sheath dress with black shoes, belt and hat. It was my ideal picture of what being a grown-up woman should be like (still is). Even though, I saw her many times after that and realized what a beautiful voice she possesses, that picture of her has never left my mind. (more...)
