BWW Interviews: 'Girl Singer' Stephanie Blythe, the Met's Bearded Lady and the Songbird of the SouthBWW Interviews: 'Girl Singer' Stephanie Blythe, the Met's Bearded Lady and the Songbird of the South
by Richard Sasanow - May 4, 2015

Stephanie Blythe--who's at the Met these days singing Baba the Turk in Stravinsky's THE RAKE'S PROGRESS--“abhors labels.” That's why, despite a cavernous voice that has become even deeper with age and could easily be termed mezzo or contralto, she tells me to call her “a girl singer.” (more...)

Pacific Symphony Relaunches Santa Ana Strings Violin Instruction ProgramPacific Symphony Relaunches Santa Ana Strings Violin Instruction Program
by BWW News Desk - May 30, 2015

Orange County, Calif.—May 29, 2015—Smiles of joy and excitement lit up the faces of 50 elementary school children when they each received a new, shiny violin to take home during the re-launch in January of Pacific Symphony's Santa Ana Strings (SAS), a Heartstrings program. Thanks to a partnership between the Symphony and the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Ana (BGCSA), SAS returned for a six-month pilot program (with plans to expand to year-round) that provides after-school violin instruction by Symphony and volunteer musicians. SAS is inspired by El Sistema, the international model defined as an intensive youth music program seeking to effect social change through the pursuit of musical excellence. Serving elementary school students living in Santa Ana, the program is designed to foster creativity, perseverance and self-esteem as well as develop teamwork skills through the study and practice of the violin. BWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's CHOIR BOY Uses Music to Perfection in Telling This Affecting Coming of Age StoryBWW Reviews: The Guthrie Theater's CHOIR BOY Uses Music to Perfection in Telling This Affecting Coming of Age Story
by Jill Schafer - Jun 23, 2015

What do you get when you combine a talented young playwright, an excellent cast that includes five up-and-coming actors and two beloved veterans of local stages, stirring a capella gospel music arranged by a local musical legend, and the Twin Cities' best director of 'theater musically?' You get CHOIR BOY, a lovely and affecting play about a young gay man coming of age in an African American boarding school. The playwright is Tarell Alvin McCraney of the excellent Brother/Sister trilogy that Pillsbury House Theatre has produced in its entirety in the last several years. While those plays have an epic, mythical quality, CHOIR BOY is more grounded in reality, but just as beautifully written. Add in musical direction and arrangement by Sanford Moore and direction by Peter Rothstein, an expert at using music in the best possibly way to enhance the theatrical storytelling, and you have something quite special going on in the Guthrie's Dowling Studio. BWW Reviews: MARK NADLER's 'Addicted To The Spotlight' at 54 Below Showcases Abundant Talent, Cleverly FramedBWW Reviews: MARK NADLER's 'Addicted To The Spotlight' at 54 Below Showcases Abundant Talent, Cleverly Framed
by Alix Cohen - Feb 19, 2015

When Mark Nadler, singing the iconic Irving Berlin song and Al Jolson standard 'Let Me Sing and I'm Happy,' strolls from the back of 54 Below to his rightful place center stage (accompanied by Nick Russo on banjo), he seems, in all respects, a jaunty, debonair thespian. The song is light, unembellished, infectious. What you're watching in truth is a state of the art ballistic missile unerringly headed for its target. 'My name is Mark and I'm a spotlightaholic.' Tonight Nadler celebrates two 'out of control' spotlightaholics--Danny Kaye and Al Jolson--both of whom put themselves (and kept themselves) in front of audiences every available moment. (The artist designates himself as a 'functional' sufferer of the compulsion.) Memorable anecdotes enlighten and entertain. 'In the spirit of Kaye and Jolson, however, this show is all about ME.' Four decades in, Nadler calls show business his religion. Judging by ensuing narrative, his zealous devotion is, in context, worthy of sainthood. (more...)
