The Princeton Symphony Orchestra (PSO) announces its 2017-2018 season, the biggest yet with a six-concert classical series including Beethoven's Ninth Symphony and its life-affirming “Ode to Joy,” symphonies by Mendelssohn and Shostakovich, an entire program of Mozart, and exciting PSO co-commissions by Philip Glass and Saad Haddad. The PSO continues to attract quality solo artists with an all-star line-up of pianists Simone Dinnerstein and Shai Wosner, violinist Ilya Kaler, and cellist Joshua Roman performing his own work, Awakening. Collaborations with the Westminster Symphonic Choir and the LARK Quartet set the bar early on for quality performances throughout the season. Music Director Rossen Milanov will conduct all but the March concert, which will be led by guest conductor Teddy Abrams. BWW Review: Brave, Bold, and Beautiful SPRING AWAKENING at Lyric Music Theater

South Portland's Lyric Music Theater is taking a bold and daring step in presenting the 2006 musical adaptation of Frank Wedekind's 1891 provocative play, Spring Awakening. The wrenching musical drama explores with a piercing honesty the lives of teenagers and their adult authority figures locked in a lethal struggle as the young men and women search for freedom of expression, sexual liberation and fulfillment, and the embrace of their true identities in a dark, corseted world of repression and convention. The issues raised by Frank Wedekind's play remain as potent and relevant today as they did in the late 19th century, and the Steven Sater book and lyrics and Duncan Sheik music remain true to the essence of the piece. Wedekind's world - the world of Freud and nascent psychology - is a bleak place where adults abuse their children psychologically and physically, where creativity is stifled, and love - as a total expression of body and soul - is forbidden. In this dark universe, the young villagers long in secret and search for a path through the pain. (more...)

New Tampa Players is bringing Jesus Christ Superstar to their home stage at the University Area CDC March 31 through April 2 and April 7 through April 9, but first they have been taking the show on the road. Earlier this month, the cast performed a musical revue for the resident families at Metropolitan Ministries. 'Rehearsals for Superstar have been demanding, so I wasn't sure how the cast would feel about giving up a Saturday,' Director G. Frank Meekins said, 'but in the end it was a privilege to be able to share musical theater with adults and children who might not otherwise get to see a live performance like this.' (more...)
