BWW Review: A Battle of Beliefs in Danai Gurira's THE CONVERT at Central Square TheatreBWW Review: A Battle of Beliefs in Danai Gurira's THE CONVERT at Central Square Theatre
by Justin J Sacramone - Feb 8, 2016

In a blackout we hear shouting. The front door of a minister's house is kicked opened. Enter a man dragging in a native woman wearing rags. He hands her off to the housekeeper. The housekeeper barks a few commands and forces her into a back room. The opening scene of Underground Railway Theatre's must see production of The Convert, Danai Gurira's three hour intoxicating drama about 19th century Africa post-colonialism, is spoken in the native language of Shona. Although Shona is not commonly spoken in America, it is clear what we just witnessed. Freedom. Or so we believe. (more...)

BWW Review: JACK & JILL Spar For Love at Santa Monica PlayhouseBWW Review: JACK & JILL Spar For Love at Santa Monica Playhouse
by Don Grigware - Feb 8, 2016

In Jack & Jill, playwright Jane Martin introduces us to a fictitious contemporary couple, both from previous failed marriages, who meet, have a reluctant affair, replete with doubts and insecurities, and eventually tackle marriage. At the very top they are skeptical about love and commitment - at least she is - so like a modern day George Bernard Shaw, Martin predicts unhappiness, a great deal of it. What makes this two-character comedy work especially well is the finite chemistry between its two stars Tanna Frederick and Robert Standley, two dynamite actors who are a joy to watch, under the expert direction of Jack Heller at the Santa Monica Playhouse through March 27. BWW Review: Washington Stage Guild vs. Critics in ST. NICHOLASBWW Review: Washington Stage Guild vs. Critics in ST. NICHOLAS
by Roger Catlin - Feb 1, 2016

I was all ready and looking forward to the final installment of Back to Methuselah, the George Bernard Shaw epic that the Washington Stage Guild has been staging in chapters since 2014. But building the future, or more precisely, 'as far as thought can reach' proved too costly for the venerable D.C. group this year, so they put it off until next year, switching it with next season's planned revival of St.' Nicholas. STAGE TUBE: On This Day for 1/25/16- PYGMALIONSTAGE TUBE: On This Day for 1/25/16- PYGMALION
by Stage Tube - Jan 25, 2016

Today in 1938, Pygmalion opened at the Maxine Elliott's Theatre. Written by Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw, the play centers on Professor of phonetics Henry Higgins. He makes a bet that he can train a bedraggled Cockney flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her to assume a veneer of gentility, the most important element of which, he believes, is impeccable speech. The play is a sharp lampoon of the rigid British class system of the day and a comment on women's independence, packaged as a romantic comedy. (more...)
