Isobel, a nine-year old Portuguese girl, roams around her neighborhood lost and frightened. She observes a series of interconnected episodes that give graphic glimpses into the desperate and unsettled lives of the strangers in her community. With no distinction between reality and fantasy, Isobel is drawn into a dreamlike state to consider the power of compassion, forgiveness, and redemption.

"It's this animal we all have tucked away in the corner of our subconscious and it's very frightening to see the cage unlocked..." ?
- Playwright Judith Thompson

Lion in the Streets was the recipient of the Chalmers Outstanding New Play Award in 1991. Written by Toronto based playwright Judith Thompson, the play is often labeled "dark" because it sheds light on difficult topics without any sugar-coating, justification, or shame. Although written more than two decades ago, Lion in the Streets brings awareness to problems still hidden in our society from people of different age and wealth demographics. As Isobel observes the distress of those in her Toronto neighborhood, Thompson narrows in on evil and violence also concealed within the Vancouver community.

"This show continues to be as relevant as it was in 1990 when it was first conceived. Through the heightened reality that Thompson gives us, we are able to explore the very real issues of poverty, adultery, sexuality, rape, abuse, and mental illness. In this show nothing is as it seems, and yet everything is very real."
- Director Bronwyn Carradine

Resonance Theatre Collective was founded by a group of University of Victoria Theatre Department alumni who wanted to reimagine a production of Lion in the Streets that they performed during their final year of university. They brought on new designers and cast members, as well as a new director. The cast and designers largely consist of emerging talent from Studio 58 and UVIC. Director Bronwyn Carradine is a graduate from Studio 58 and the recipient of the Ken & Anne Watts Memorial Scholarship for outstanding members of the artistic community; and the Earl Klein Memorial Scholarship for creative expression, interest in all aspects of theatre, commitment, and determination. She is dedicated to telling Canadian stories, pushing human emotions, and sharing the un-shareable.
